Haven’t tried copper tape on scanners, but I use it under guitar pickgards and the mounting screw holes to make contact with the shielding paint in the pickup cavities. Works wonders.

The “G” means you are using the global attenuator. It may be the attenuator is reducing the signal enough you can no longer receive it. Turn the global attenuator off and see if the signal improves.

Input audio and playback audio are two different things. You should be able to mute playback audio without affecting the stream input audio.
