Yes, they are O2 control heads and I could do that... but why is this happening? All my single control head O2's just work when connected to an external speaker (and by "work" I mean don't also produce sound from the head speaker).

I was having the same issue, I spoke with Motorola and it's a firmware release issue. The CHUP/CHDN buttons won't work in versions prior to R12 (mine are R09's). You can check your model number, if it ends in "AN" R09 is as far as it can go I believe.
