    Idea rip-off

That's exactly the reason I initially set mine up. :) Decided to throw together an informational website too, and shared it with a local forum... have quite a few dedicated listeners now. Curious to see if we have anyone else streaming from around the state!

    Idea rip-off

I'm on the other end of the state from you, but I've been streaming a couple of our local agencies for a while now: Grants Pass Department of Public Safety - Police dispatch Josephine County Sheriff's Office - Dispatch (MP3-streaming media capable player required) There are some intermittent...

    Oregon Air Show

Sad. I guess from the news sources the pilot was the only casualty, but one house was destroyed and another two were damaged. It happens sometimes, but still unexpected and saddening :(

    Donations will now be subscriptions

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I'm stuck on a dialup right now and am having issues loading a few pages. I love the site but just don't use it enough to warrant a full subscription. However, I've donated in the past when I could afford it and would love to continue to do so. I'm...

    Just wondered

Suppose I'll share too. Name: Kameron (Kam) Loc: Grants Pass, OR (Southern Oregon, Josephine County) Age: 25 Scanning: Been doing it for years. Started with tuning into SW frequencies when I was about 11 years old and moved on from there. Kinda got back into it again in 2003. Interests...

    Dispatch?

Pretty standard for our public safety agencies here in Southern Oregon to go by their numeric station identifier for the dispatch callsign. Each agency is assigned a station "number", which dispatch usually is referenced by. For example, our local state police dispatchers get called by the...

    Josephine County OR - ?????

In regards to the two private fire services, Rural/Metro (used to be Valley Fire Service) is by far the most popular by number of subscribers despite the fact that it's more expensive. Regarding the KKC610/153.9500 license, I've never actually heard any traffic on that frequency. -Kameron

I can only hear one side of the conversation

I'll assume since you're hearing the "base" and nobody else, they're probably on simplex (no repeater system). My guess is, you're hearing the "base" since their transmit antenna is at a fairly high altitude. For the same reason (high receive antenna), the base can hear the mobile radios. I...

How Does an MDT work and can it be scanned?

Sounds like the "MDT Monitor" app. If I remember correctly... and if that's what this is, that doesn't do decryption, it just decodes the data bursts and messages (message id to text/etc.)

How Does an MDT work and can it be scanned?

I have to respectfully disagree with this generalization; I can sit all day and listen to the data bursts on our local PD's VHF MDC system repeater and not break the law here. If it were unencrypted and I were to log/view the data, from my understanding I'd still be legal as long as I didn't...

Funny/Odd things heard on the scanner

Last night... Unit dispatched to an emotionally disturbed subject who claims that someone is stealing his neighbor's furniture and putting it in a moving truck, and that they're going to come over to his (the complainant's) house and stab him. Complainant wants to remain on the line with 911...

    Cell Phones and Scanner Interference?

As AndrewC75 said, it's almost certainly going direct through the speaker's circuitry. This happens with my portable scanner and a Nokia TDMA phone, as well as through some inexpensive PC speakers/headphones and the same phone. Back when I had a CRT monitor and received a call, it made my...

    Online Scanner

Same here. Just note that if you want to do multiple feeds off of different scanners (i.e. I do one for our city PD and one for our county sheriff), you can install simplecast again into a different directory and run it/configure it for the 2nd feed.

Police officers to use everyday speech on airwaves

Around here, our local agencies are mostly cleartext with exception to a few status codes and location numbers (and the obligitory overuse of acronyms :D). If you listen frequently, it's pretty obvious, but if you're not on the up-and-up with their radio comms, and overhear dispatch on an...

    False sense of security?

Hm... old topic. :) Around here, it depends on the agency... Oregon State Police uses specific codes for common tasks, i.e. 12-20 is a request for priors, wants, etc. Dispatch will respond with 12-20A to inquire if the subject can hear the radio. Our county and city agency is dispatched out...

Is Signaling Used in Your Area?

Only one police agency in my area utilizes PTT ID for it's units - they use MDC1200 bursts at the beginning of transmission. The rest are simply voice and nothing more. By the way, thanks for the awesome link. :)
