Personal Scanning Histories - How did you get into it and what was 'your first'?

I wish I still had mine. I let it and mom's get away from me a few years back. Wouldn't be good for anything but fire pagers and 2M Ham repeaters but they would be fun to fire up once in awhile. Handheld scanners back then...all I could do was look and drool. First handheld I ever owned was...

    GRE PSR500 Power cord

I used to use a wall wart from a big box store on my Pro-651, basically the same radio. Find the correct tip, polarize it properly, set the selector to 6V and off to the races. These can typically be had for less than $10 and I had zero issues with it until my granddaughter knocked the scanner...

    GRE-800 Upgrade, EZ-Scan Question

Yes there is. Just find the directory your data is stored in and open it in the correct E-Z Scan version. Contrariwise, you can read the card with the 1080/1088 version, use the Restore Defaults option, then re-input any custom settings and save. Either way you're quickly ready to go.

Personal Scanning Histories - How did you get into it and what was 'your first'?

When I was 5 or 6 my parents got a multiband, I think it was a Midland as it came from the local Western Auto store. Bought just for broadcast FM since the local AM station added an FM side that was simulcast except that the morning and noon news moved to the FM side while the AM side stuck...

    Tk-2180 speaker issue

We had this issue on the VFD with a couple of our 2312's. Guys wearing them when they were working in the shop, welding and grinding...dammit, at least put them up on a shelf somewhere out of ferrous debris range!

Several months later, and I'm still attracting CB stuff like a magnet

I may know where one is available...some assembly required.

    TRX-1: TRX-1 Reviews Wanted

Late to the party here but I'm very happy with my TRX-1. BUT...I don't have any LSM closer than 50-ish miles from where I live and no NXDN and only a little DMR that I'm actually interested in, and it's conventional. For all of that and the P25 p.1 that makes up the lion's share of what I scan...

    Command Frequencies

Same here, I have the alts too but almost never see them in use. Just there to keep the site running in case the circuits running the primary go ker-plunk. Also a Moto system (Safe-T).

are there any stores that offer payment plans for scanners?

I did this several years back for a good friend who was disabled and could no longer work. He's sadly passed on now but I can't count how many times he told me that listening to that WS-1095 was the highlight of his day and made being cooped up bearable for him. For the OP, I'll echo Paypal...

    Command Frequencies

Yes, regular and alternate control channels. You don't need to program the other site frequencies, just the talkgroups. The scanner will automatically tune to the active frequency for the talkgroups you have programmed via info from the control channel datastream.

    Scanner Antenna House Gutter Mounting?

Many moons ago, I once cross-bred an RS all-band trunk-lip mount mobile scanner antenna with a gutter mount from a CB antenna. Yes, most vehicles used to have rain gutters on them (giving up my age here). I used it on a house gutter where I lived at the time...but those were old-school steel...

    WS1095: Strange audio issue

Thanks for the replies. The scanner has refused to act up since I made the original post. Perhaps invoking the intellectual power of Radio Reference intimidated it into behaving, LOL. I am always very suspicious when something "fixes itself."

Old School Uniden Scanner Still In Regular Use?

Bought a pair of BC560xlt's when a local shop had them on sale in 1989. Kept one and gave the other to mom for her birthday to supplement her old BC3. Mine finally quit but I still have mom's (SK in 2012) and it does great for analog stuff on VHF-Hi and UHF. Usually have it on daily, running...

When you can't listen to law enforcement, what do you listen to?

My primary focus is LE/FD/EMS traffic and thankfully most of that is in the clear where I live, for the time being anyway. If it ever went dark I would probably put more focus on commercial and rail traffic. I'm nowhere close to an AF or ANG base so there's only the occasional squawk on those...

    Marion County & Surrounding

I have done a few for a few folks too but I'd never advertise or call myself professional. And when I did it was always free or for a cold one.

    WS1095: Strange audio issue

It belatedly occurred to me to push the knob in after I made that post and of course the scanner hasn't acted up since. The problem has occurred with both internal and external speakers. So I'm waiting for it to do it again and see if pushing the knob restores volume, or if it doesn't, if the...

    WS1095: Strange audio issue

Lately I have noticed my 1095 occasionally showing reception on the screen but not passing any audio. If I turn the volume way up, it will start passing audio. This would scream "dirty pot" in older electronics...but the 1095 uses a rotary switch so I am a little puzzled about it. I have the...

    Hoosier SAFE-T thread 2021

Nothing earthshaking to report but it has been brought to my attention that the Vigo Central/Terre Haute Locution Dispatch system is now being informally referred to by at least some personnel as "Little Debbie." Gave me a good chuckle.

AT scores more old cool CB gear

That Robyn if I recall correctly was a "modern" tube radio. They sounded pretty good but some folks I knew who bought them expecting to get a lot with a peak & tune were a little disappointed. Cool-looking radio just the same.
