Dealing with Hearing Loss: Closed-Captions Possible on Radios?

I'm with Merlin on this one. I too have some hearing loss. (tinnitus, have trouble discerning speech in loud environments, etc.) I think a DSP speaker or additional EQ would be of benefit to you. The ability to tailor the sound to fit your hearing ability can do wonders. I do it at home with...

Cell phone overload due to eclipse.

1/2" ? That's the new wave style of doing things. I had mine out "old school". I tell people I had mine out via "cesarean" (and I've got the scar to prove it) though I can attest that that comment will illicit no sympathy from any mothers in the room. What I wasn't pleased with was the nurses...

Cell phone overload due to eclipse.

I had much the same experience over Y2K, about as uneventful as anything could be. I can't recall any system being adversely affected. However, since I'd had my appendix out about 10 years prior, I didn't have the post Y2K drama that you did. Glad to hear that hear that you survived it without...

How do you go about finding an existing tower to lease space for a new GMRS repeater setup?

If you are chummy with any businesses in the area of interest that have tall"ish" buildngs then that might be a possible solution. The company that I work for leases space to various cell companies at a number of our sites. Don't expect it to be especially cheap though. I've helped work up some...

DMR with a computer and analog transceiver?

I don't know how you'd reliably extract DMR signals for a UV5R. If you're looking to receive only, USB SDR dongle would be the least expensive way to go that I can think of. If you wish to transmit, I think the least expensive option might be a TYT UV380 the mor popular VHF and UHF bands.

Open for input on what these antennas are doing

Current code isn't a reflection of past work. I've been on a number of roofs of older buildings that were pretty "live" with just my weight. ( Still fairly south of 200lbs) If this was done over a load bearing column (as Ubbe posited) then things might be okay. Given the rest of if the...

You're far more optistic than I am Ubbe.

Open for input on what these antennas are doing

Unfortunately the "IT Crowd" doesn't have this feat of enginerring wizardy cornered. It's pretty common on consumer TV satellite dish installs as well although I haven't seen it on this scale though. Heck, almost 1000lbs of cement blocks in an area little larger than a sheet of plywood on a roof...

    Thread Lock

I've never used (nor would I) either method for "mission critical" work. However, as I mentioned, both have worked for me when I've needed to Macgyver a non-permanent thread holding fix.

I'm thinking wi-fi of some sort but good grief! THe first thing that came to mind when I saw that photo is Jeff Foxworthy's: You might be a redneck if.........

    Thread Lock

Not directly related to Diamond antennas but for screw/thrad retention in general: for screws that are large enough, a wrap of teflon tape around the thread prior to running the threads together. The tape provides an interference fit, minimizing the chances on something working loose. for...

Baofeng How to use standard wired headphones with 3.5 mm jack on Baofeng type radios?

When I've wanted to do this in the pst I've either purchased or made a pigtail adapter. This minimizes the strain that occurs with a straight adapter. It does, though require both a male plug and a female inline jack as well as the labor involved to put it together. It's easier on the radio in...

    A friend asked...

I received one in the mail from a contact I had a few years ago. It was my first and only. My wife gave me a photo book of QSL cards a ham had collected over the years but I expect that doesn't count. Kind of fun to look at though.

    Disabilities and tests

Thanks for the correction. I didn't notice the mistype but I did correct it. And, as you've detailed, the OP has a two year window to study and tak eht etest with the current question pool.

    Disabilities and tests

You mentioned that the stress of testing may make your memory shortcomings worse. As others have noted, you only need to get 26 of 35 correct for your tech license. Keep in mind that there is a fixed question pool that only changes every few years. Online practice tests from that pool are...

    SDR Trunk audio channel assignment

I'm not concerned much about having too few separate audio channels but rather being able to direct them to specific speakers so that I can identify them immediately when not looking at the SDR Trunk screen.

    SDR Trunk audio channel assignment

Well, that's no fun. It seems like it would be an obvious feature especially to facilitate ease of streaming. But, thanks for getting back to me and answering my question so quickly.

    SDR Trunk audio channel assignment

I've been a user of SDR tuners and software for several years but have just recently given SDR Trunk a try. By and large I'm very happy with its performance. However, I still haven't figured out a way to direct specific transmissions of a trunked system to be directed to a specific left or right...

Camping trip through the Rockies and VHF channels

<Even more sarcasm, or at least a "smart-alec" response> I can't really see why that would be a problem. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Yep, suburban prepping at its best. If the family comes knocking, he'll be able to hold them off valiantly.
