Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

The Yaesu FT-991A is a very nice radio. I have a few friends that have that model. They are super pleased with it. As for having a Ham Radio Outlet nearby, you are one lucky ham! One of the ultimate "candy" stores! See you in the Georgia forum... 73, Dave K4EET

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

Cheap Chinese Radios (CCRs) do have a lot to be desired. But I'm not convinced that that is the problem. The 147.535 MHz repeater (WC4RAV in Marietta) appears to be a digital repeater with a non-standard offset (-0.940 MHz). If it is in-fact transmitting digital 100% of the time, with your PL...

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

On the frequencies where I asked you to set them all to "Tone", change them to "None" or "CSQ", however it is marked. That will stop the transmit PL tone (CTCSS) on your HT so you will not be able to key the repeater up when you get your license. What I want to see if those repeaters within 10...

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

No worries about being a novice. We were all there for a season of time in the past. This is my 50th year as a ham radio operator having been licensed since 1974. Hang in there and we'll figure out what is amiss. BTW, I was on the Marietta 145.490 MHz repeater for about 30 minutes again talking...

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

The "static" may very well be digital transmissions. Listen to the 145.490 MHz repeater only.

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

@PewPewChris, wrong repeater. Dial up your 145.490 MHz repeater for Marietta, GA.

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

With respect to the above repeater (KK4OIO on 145.490 MHz), it can be listened to on the East Coast Reflector at: https://www.eastcoastreflector.com/ I do hear people keying up but no talking for the most part. If you can let me know when you are listening, @PewPewChris, I'll put out a call...

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

I was just on the KK4OIO repeater (145.490 MHz) via EchoLink. That is also tied to an AllStar network with many repeaters. I was talking to Ben, K8BWK, in Ohio. By chance did you hear us talking?

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

Hi @PewPewChris, You listed quite a few repeaters. Almost 20 to be more specific. I have not had a chance to look at each repeater’s specifics but I suspect some of them can work in analog or digital modes. When operating in digital mode, all that you will hear on your Baofeng will be noise...

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

Hi @PewPewChris, Change all of the TSQL to Tone. I’ll have more to say in my next post. 73, Dave K4EET

Yet to hear a single peep on my Baofeng UV-5R

Hi @PewPewChris, A few things come to mind: 1. How far away are you from the closest repeater and is it an analog repeater? 2. Did you put the repeater’s PL tone (CTCSS) in your receive frequency entry? If you did, set it to “none” as most repeaters do not transmit a PL tone. Having a PL tone...

    New Guy starting out, Hello

Hey Jeff (@shocker03p4), Welcome to Radio Reference! Great to hear that you are getting your ham radio license. You came to the right place to get your questions answered. Ham radio is a great hobby. This is my 50th year as a ham. It’s better to ask a specific question so we know how best to...

Hey there, I am new to CB Radio Forum in RadioReference.com

Hi Paul, of course one difference is the FM mode in U.S. versions of certain models. The other may be "type acceptance" as we call it here. Somewhere on all U.S. versions there is a model number plate that has an "FCC ID" number. Perhaps another difference is the omission of that number and in...

Watts new on the horizon in radios?

Another consideration for choosing Yaesu versus ICOM/Kenwood is what hams in your area and/or local ham club are doing in digital radio. Yaesu has System Fusion whereas the digital radios from ICOM/Kenwood use D-STAR. For example, just about all of my ham friends use System Fusion so...

"Emergency Radio" False and Fictitious Statements

I suspect that the ARRL already monitors the Amateur Radio forum. I also doubt if they would actually post here since, as far as I know, they have never posted on Radio Reference as an organization. Sleep well tonight my friend knowing that. 😃 73, Dave K4EET

"Emergency Radio" False and Fictitious Statements

Not sure why you feel that way about the ARRL. But please don’t derail this thread to a new theme discussing the ARRL. The OP is trying to determine if the FCC is looking at the many misguided claims that can lead to further enforcement actions. The new Volunteer Monitor Program (VMP) as seen...
