DSWCI is no more

Today is a sad day; the Danish SW Clubs International (DSWCI) is no more. They were well known as one of the top Nordic DX clubs, and were the long time producers of the Tropical Band Survey(TBS), a publication that listed broadcasters in the 120, 90 and 60 meter bands.

Their website now contains archived material which may be of use for some...with some additional news about the TBS being produced privately now. Here's the link...

Reading the list of reasons why they decided to dissolve the organization is very informative and interesting:

• More and more SW and MW stations replace their broadcasting with live streaming on the Internet with high quality.

Note especially the first reason: streaming of content. Sound familiar? :wink:

The first and third reasons are intertwined. It goes back to discussions that Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott, myself, and several others have had over the years.

The internet can be stopped rather easily - it's much more difficult to stop a HF transmission. Unfortunately when a disaster or some sort of violent government overthrow takes place, the internet is one area that usually suffers.

It seems the SW and MW clubs are going the way of the magazines and newsletters. There's no need to join a club when you can log into a forum or find info online. Hams are complaining about the slow demise of their clubs, too.

Geo fencing is what will wipe out the "online" version of DXing once the over-the-air version is gone. It's already happening in FM and AM broadcast streams.

I once tried to hear Turkey's stream on TuneIn. Thddddt. Dicey. I could hear it on HF nightly in the late 1990's.

Enjoy hearing other countries while you still can, folks.... By 2030 it will all be probably very gone.
