Radio Reference will delete this, but everyone can thank online scanner feeds for Police depts going encrypted. Don't think on line scanner feeds are the issue. Research the topic.

From what I've been told, they will not encrypt them because outside depts/agencies (e.g. Coroner, UPRR) need access.

Coroners Office Investigators, UPRR Police, and CC Parks Police as system subscribers and sworn personnel already, certainly should qualify for being trusted with at least some of the encrypted channels.

Also, plenty of mentions on the Admin channel today of the "encrypted Admin" channel -- some personnel attempting to sign-on with Metro Dispatch were told to switch to it, other units were not.

If LVMPD is truly concerned about opsec/comsec (all of a sudden, after deliberately leaving some channels non-secure for a period of time...) and truly competent, they will encrypt Admin, Records, & perhaps some others like CC Animal Control (they're sometimes involved in raids & other sensitive investigations along with the LVMPD Animal Cruelty Unit) but then dedicate a non-secure VHF/700MHz patched LVMPD Metro Dispatch"Access" channel for outside agencies like Mohave County SO et al. There are already numerous cross-patched VHF/800MHz mutual aid channels around, but the VHF sides seem to be forgotten about, and the 800MHz side has restrictions on the type of traffic the channels can be used for.

Local Vegas media coverage on the encryption; streaming LE radio traffic on broadcastify.com is also mentioned in the article linked to below. Sheriff Lombardo was quoted as saying that the switch to [full?] encryption has been in the works for about the past 2 years and was not resulting from unencrypted comms during the mass shooting last October:

The subject was also reported on the TV news tonight.

It is an interesting story. It ends stating that THE MEDIA will still be able to listen.
I wonder how that works?
Is there a Law giving them access, although The Taxpaying Public cannot?
An explanation here would be awesome.

Typically lengthy MOU, basic model radio that is locked with limited talkgroups, which can be inhibited or revoked at anytime. Typically the certified press agency will clear anything with a PIO prior to releasing anything audio wise some may have stipulations in the MOU.

They also pay to have a affiliated, non tx radio on the system. Basically renting it while paying for it to be on it. It wouldn't be ideal for a average Joe to be able to pay into a subscriber fee, other costs thrown.

Since most media is partnered with larger ones money isn't a issue. Though one cannot speculate I am free press so I deserve one. One would need to be accredited press agency along with the other guidelines, paper work etc.

I should add that most cannot leave the news room or assigned person or persons of contact and or leave the building. Some of the MOUs I have seen prohibit the leased radio from leaving the newsroom.

Options are, become a accredited press, or be a first responder.

Remember, the media tells us what we need to know. If the news has to be pre approved by the sheriff, that’s a really big filter. The sheriff has it made now, no one policing the police.

I think it was wrong for them to block the citizens out, especially now when there have been so many murders in Vegas just this year so far. The news is delayed. I know Metro PD does their best, and I don't even live in Vegas ,but I visit often, but when there is something happening, especially a violent crime, I want to know to AVOID that area. There is a murderer in Vegas going around Killing homeless people, basically a serial killer, and now we have no idea when or where this is happening until the news reports it usually sometime after it has happened.

I would imagine the sheriff is laughing all the way to the bank knowing he took some law abiding citizens off of the street with their extra set of eyes and ears. I hope that he would check out our forum and read what is posted.....maybe he can't read and only believes what he is supposed to know. He he.

LVMPD

Not getting any LVMPD on the 536hp. The rebroadcast or whatever they're doing on 158.79 is all I get.

Myself and another local noted no activity on the TRS and VHF repeaters Sunday evening and all day Monday. This morning I heard units logging on around 0500 hours, not sure what that quiet period was about unless its a sign of whats to come.
