Does anyone know if the AR5001D will work with an SDR-14 ? From what I hear it works great with the AR5000.
First let me say I do not own the AR5001D and have not seen anything other than literature on the unit, I do own the SDR-14 and other SDRs. The following is what I can put together from the literature on the AR5001D.
Will the AR5001D work with the SDR-14? I guess it will depend on what exactly you mean by "work with".
From 40 kHz to 25 MHz the AR5001D is a direct conversion machine. That means no IF and no way for the SDR-14 to use any of the signal that the AR is using. From 25 MHz up the AR is a double, triple, or quad conversion superhet, depending on the exact tuning range, all with a final IF of around 45 MHz. 45 MHz is above the RF port range of the SDR-14, but not above the direct input port capability.
The IF of the AR5001D (in frequency ranges it has an IF) is about +/- 7.5 MHz, or 15 MHz of bandwidth.
That means that below 25 MHz the SDR-14 brings no capability to the AR5001D that I can tell. Above 25 MHz the SDR could be used as a detector and/or panadapter with a maximum display width (because of filtering in the AR5001D) of 15 MHz, +/- 7.5 MHz, centered around the 45 MHz IF.
The SDR-14 works well with the older AR5000 because the 5000 has a 10.7 MHz IF that is active at all tuned frequencies.
So, in general and from what I can see, I would say using the SDR-14 with the AR5001D would not be useless (at least above 25 MHz), but not even close to as useful as purchasing the AOR optional digital I/Q board.
