I've live streamed my scanner for about 3 years from Fort Myers here in SW Florida. Before... I'd used Shoutcast as a server and the Winamp software. My old page is here
http://www.pinelakeshome.com/Scanner/radio1.htm No video... just 800 trunked on the L channel and RSW air on the R channel. The Shoutcast page is here
http://69.136.23.76:8000/index.html Those streams are still up.
I'd received many emails in regard to what talk groups are being heard. In other words... listeners could tell by the type of comms it was fire related... but what fire department? I'm using a Radio Shack PRO 2053 and there is no screen output for the display.
Then I was reading about video stream feeds. A free server is available from
http://www.streamwebtown.com They allow you to stream a video/audio source for free. You can use Windows Media Encoder software (available free from their site) So... I thought... why not just aim a cheap web cam at the scanner display... and feed the audio from the scanner as the audio source. It worked right off the first time.
Sooooooooooo... what you're seeing is a web cam video of my scanner display... and the audio is streamed at the same time. It allows listeners to hear the audio... and also see what frequency/talkgroup is being heard.
I'm currently testing this stream until June 1. Then I have to see what the bandwidth use is. If it is acceptable... I may take down my other feeds and just make the new setup permanent. Right now I have cables all over the place. It isn't pretty! Also... I need to see how reliable the streamwebtown site is. Shoutcast will run forever... needing very little attention. I've already had to reset the streamwebtown twice.
The only bad think I've seen so far... is the audio can sound a little like "Donald Duck" sometimes. Otherwise... it's pretty good!
Hope that answers your questions. Thanks for the comments. If you have other questions... I'll try to answer them for you.
