05 Tahoe revision-3 with RH96

For the longest time I wanted to mount two radios in my truck. Today with the help of a good friend "TalonIILM" we were able to mount both a 996T and a BCT15. The BCT15 is installed in the lower storage pocket and the 996 is in the center console storage connected to the RH96. The whole project took us just under 6 hours. We wanted everything to look clean.

RH96 support bracket attached to Proclip.

Added switches for 996 power and Nav system bypass.

Uniden speakers held on with industrial strength double sided tape.
Before I had a larger RS Speaker by my knee.

Looks good, curious what you do with 2 scanners. I always wonder about people that have more than one in a car though, so it is not just you :)

There are many advantages to running two scanners. One being I can have a combination of different agencies or counties running on separate radios. I can have one run EMS / Fire while the other runs Sheriff / Police. I can run Close Call on one while listening to traffic on the other. The list can go on forever on the possibilities. One of the main reasons I installed two radios was due to missing a lot of important traffic while I was listening to something else. When a major event happens like a fire, pursuit, etc , I can monitor two agencies at a time and not miss what is going on.

VERY nice set up!
What kind of antenna are you using?
Any pix?

i have a similar setup in my truck(Avalanche)

Do the speakers get in the way of your gas foot?

And finally, are you on battery or ignition power for all/any radio?

Working on the antennas next week. Right now I have two Larsen Mag Mounts on the roof. I ordered two Larsen NMO-K-BNC from HRO and they should be here this week. Curently I'm running one Larsen Triband and one Maxscan 1000. Both are great antennas.

Do the speakers get in the way of your gas foot?
No, the speakers do not get in the way at all, even if I have to move the seat up. I use to have a larger RS speaker on the dash by my knee but I was always dreading if I got in an accident my knee would hit it. Where I have the speakers sound really great on the driver’s side.

And finally, are you on battery or ignition power for all/any radio?
We tapped into the cigarette lighter wires on the center console. The 996 is tapped to the left one and the RH96 is on the right. We installed QD’s on both so we could remove the center panel if needed. Both radios have inline fuse protection.

An excellent example of how it should be done!

Clean and neat with no wires or parts to go flying about the cabin.

I also like how you have concealed power switches for the 996T and Nav system.

The in dash Uniden is the way to go- but I just can't give up my stereo system!

Post some antenna pics if you have time!

Regards, Commscanaus.

Thanks for the comments. Hope to post the antenna pics by next weekend if the NMO's come in.

Wise871,

I see your a HAM and I know this doesn't apply to you but could you post about your experiences with the Florida Scanner law? I'm a HAM as well and travel to Florida quite frequently. I'm just curious on if you've ever been pulled over and how it was handled.

Thanks

I’ve never been pulled over for having just a scanner installed in my vehicle. One of the rules that many will tell you is, if you drive responsible, don’t draw attention to yourself, or case emergency calls, then there is NO reason why you should be stopped for having a scanner in your vehicle. I got my HAM ticket so I would be legal in Florida. I carry a copy of my license and the Florida statute in my glove box just in case.

I’ve “knock-on-wood” never been pulled over for speeding either. If I was, most likely if the officer looked in my vehicle while talking to me, would not recognize I had two scanners installed. Reason being I would not have them blaring to draw attention to them. Also many folks these days have some kind of electronic device mounted to there dash such as GPS, SAT Radio, Cell, etc. I would most likely switch the scanners off. Why make the situation worse, especially if I was stopped for speeding. Everyday I stop by my local convenient store for coffee. I always see Deputies getting gas or drinks before the start of the shift. Again, I don’t blare my radios or draw unwanted attention to myself even when parked right next to them, there’s no need.

As far as my antenna install, no one pays attention. Half the cars around here have some kind of FM, CB, HAM or Cell antennas installed on there vehicles.

If you’re ever pulled over it will most likely be due to speeding and not having a scanner. Unless the officer asks, why advertise. If he does notice and asks, be truthful, polite, and if needed, present your HAM license and a copy of the statute.

The pictures use to be there but Mediacom moved servers on me and I never came back and updated the links. Since the server move I replaced the RH-96 with a Yeasu FTM-350. The setup looks really good and I will post some picks soon. Here is a shot of my latest setup.

Great job. Thanks for reposting your pic. I used a Tahoe as a work vehicle, and loved it. Great vehicle, lots of radio room!
