To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just got an '06 Silverado. Has anyone mounted an antenna near the hood? Or, are there any other suggestions. I'm not up for drilling holes so that rules out a lot. Thanks in advance.

I had a 1/4 wave mounted with a lip mount on the hood... Worked good but of course there was some reflection but it never affected me getting back to dispatch.

I then ran a mag mount ( I know guys ) on the roof of the truck and it worked better and SWR was Flat.

Since then I got rid of my truck and have a Monte Carlo SS w/ a lip mount 5/8 Wave Antenex on the hood... I'm not a fan of drilling holes although sometime I will.

I have an antenna mounted on the driver's side of the hood lip. It works ok, but there is noticable attenuation in certain directions.

I also have two of these mounts from geotool and they are perfect.

There is a mount that bolts to the fender bolts and lets you put an antenna on the drivers side in the same spot as the passenger side antenna.

2 other options.

Go with a glass mount antenna. Tessco has several of them to choose from and they are tunable to a degree. They only handle 50 watts but the ones tessco sells work great. I just put two on a new F-150 2 weeks back.

Get a toolbox put in the bed and mount your antenna to it. This is what I did with my 03 silverado for several years until I got brave and drilled the holes in the roof. 3 holes later, no looking back.

Three "small" holes....

Here's what I used on my Tahoe....Three small screws hold it on securly. I know you weren't interested in "drilling", but these are self tapping sheet metal screws. When you take them out, no one will ever see them. PLUS, it is YOUR truck. Are you saving it's looks for someone else "when you trade it in"?

The mounts are solid. It'll hold a 5/8's wave antenna securly too. I have one on each side of the hood. Depending on what I'm doing, I switch the 1/4 wave out for the 5/8's wave. I run a UHF 1/4 wave on the passenger side most of the time. I got black mounting brackets to match the truck.

They bend right in.

Lastly, when you DO sell the truck, you take the mounts off, put the screws right back in and paint them to match the color of the truck. It isn't a problem. Really....

I think the '06 hood is different than the previous ones. I'll post some pictures so you can see what I'm looking at. What all is involved in drilling holes and I'll assume the ideal location is on the roof. How hard is it to drop the headliner and all that stuff.

I really appreciate everyone's response.

I haven't actually looked under the hood of the '06. I suppose if the hood "rolls" down onto the fender, my bracket type wouldn't work....

I have a '88 full size Checy Blazer that we put a 2 meter antenna on the roof of. That wasn't bad at all. But, these newer vehicles have so much stuff already running up there, I'm afraid to try to mount an antenna there. At least do it myself, anyway. I'd probably take THAT install to a proffessional....

Pro-Fit mount

I also have a 06 Silverado and ran into the same problem as you when mounting an antenna. Right now I have a Comet lip mount that I have attached to the hood on the drivers side rear edge. The antenna I am using is a 5/8 wave NMO 2 meter and I don't have any problems with ground plane. The lip mount is fully adjustable for height and angle. Mine sits about 2" to 3" off the hood. I have also had this mount attached to the drivers door on the A-Post near the mirror with good success.

However...I just ordered an NMO fender mount from ProFit International and I think this is the kind of mount you are thinking about (and the kind I wanted all along). It screws fast inside the engine compartment then comes up and wraps around the top of the fender.

I have ordered it but I have not received it yet so I will post a second reply when I get it.

The website is: www.pro-fit-intl.com

And look under Antenna mounts. The SKU of the one I ordered is AVANTPF and it cost $21.15 +$8.00 for UPS ground shipping. Hope this helps.

I have a question for you. Do you know of a good way to run wires/cables from the passenger compartment to the engine compartment?? (i.e: through firewall or kicker panel)

I have the same problem with my 04 Sierra, and tried several things.

I have a permanent NMO on the roof, I pulled down the rear dome light for access, used a larsen 3/4 drill bit, which stops you from drilling into the liner. The headliner can be pulled down on the sides with your fingers just enough to fish the cable. I rarely can use this mount though, as any antenna there would hit my garage roof and parking structure roof at work.

I tried the Pro-Fit International front fender mount, but was very disappointed to find the designers never took into account the natural slope of the front fender, therefore the antenna and bracket is not vertical and sat at a funny angle.

I have been using a Radio Shack glass mount on the rear window the most, which works OK, but isn't stellar.

Recently, I just installed a Roll-N-Lock tonneau cover, so I put an NMO L-bracket on the side of that, will give that a try and post pic when it's done.

Also, something to watch for, when you pick your antenna if it's up front. Something that will drive you or your dog nuts. I had a Maxrad BMAX scanner antenna and it whistled like crazy at freeway speeds. I thought my windshield was leaking at first, and even took it to the dealer. Found out later it was the dang antenna the whole time.

Pro Fit Antenna Mount

I just got the ProFit antenna mount and put it on my truck and it works great. It attaches to a fender bolt and wraps over the fender. Here are two pics. I forgot to take one with the antenna on it, but the antenna cable also wraps easily over the fender.

I know this is an old thread but I have a 2004 Chevy truck and got that same mount. When I shut the hood the hood pushes down on the mount and bends the mount down. Did it bend the mount down on your truck?
