I have heard a rumor that the FCC and FEMA are requiring all Fire, EMS, and Police to Abolish the use of 10 Codes by Aug. 31 or Risk losing federal funds, and thier FCC License.
Has anyone else heard this, or possibly know of somewhere on the Web i can find more informations.

This is BS....

In MS, no notification of any such rediculous plan has been sent to ANY PS agency.

If it were so.. APCO would be responsible for informing everyone.

You'd be able to find info through them... and it would be all over the web.

At the hairdresser's, past the liquor store.
While there is somewhat of a trend toward plain English in the interoperable world of radio, I know of no mandate. AL-DPS policy is to use plain English when making contact with another agency or when sending teletypes/e-mails, etc. Common sense would suggest dropping codes in joint operations.

Our department received a letter from our dispatch center about this. I have spoken with the director of the dispatch center and he is supposed to email me a link to a FEMA page that address' this issue.
I personally believe it to be some type of "urban legend" that someone is trying to get going (who know's why). Of course having used the current system we use for over 15 years, and knowing over 70% of the homes in our area have scanner systems, this takes away ALL ability to maintain some security. While i know most people with scanners know the codes, most of the people the police deal with don't and it raises a level of intensity when a dispatcher comes across the radio and say's "that subject has a felony warrant," instead of "the subject has a 10-17 F (our code for felony warrant).

I am still researching this, and as soon as i do find something, i'll post it here for others.

Now if you had siad that the FCC, FEMA, and HomeSec was busting anyone that didn't comply with being interoperable..... I could believe that.

*Personal Opinion*
I think every single agency should have and be required to monitor 24/7 an discreet frequency for nationwide interop, or have it patched into a trunked TG.... Actually make that 2 for LEA's and 2 for Fire.... and well EMS has 10 UHF's and the VHF HEAR....

For LEA- both the original NLEEC, and the new narrowband version of it.
For FD's- APCO, PICK 2 of the common Mutual Aids,...
