Hi, I'm new to this whole antenna thing, I want be able to listen to the 100-200Mhz frequencies. What would be a good antenna for that frequency range? The one I have was a cheap telescopic metal antenna that stopped working. I have the stuff to diy an antenna, just not sure what kind.

Are you looking for a base or portable antenna? For base use you can't beat a Discone for covering the entire range you want. It would be very difficult to build one but you can buy them cheap these days.

Base antenna. Which Discone would you suggest?

for reception only there are no rules.
many folks follow transmitting rules to hopefully get slightly better reception.
full wave, half wave, quarter wave, paper clip, whatever works is fine.

What do you mean by stopped working? If it is not physically damaged, there is something wrong with the receiver. (Note: "MHz" rather than "mhz' or "Mhz" is the proper abbreviation. "Mega" (a million) is "M" ("m" indicates "milli" or 0.001, a thousandth) and "Hertz" is "Hz". And while I am at it being picky (but correct) "kilo" though is "k" as "k" is reserved for "Kevin" temperature scale. In RR, many people often seem to these worng, but these are the correct SI abbreviations.)

Regarding length, the same as the original whip is an reasonable start, but as prcguy said a discone (mounted high) is a much better idea but making one would not be easy. But going back to earler, what do you mean by "stopped working"?

Since you are picky, it's "Kelvin" temperature, not "Kevin".

Kevin's temperature is probably about 98.6 degrees.
