I got rid of my Pro-106 a few years ago, and seller's remorse set in recently so I picked up the Whistler 1040 handheld. Just how I remembered the 106 for the most part - great!

I almost don't know if I should post this in the amateur radio section or not, but here goes ...

Normally most radios monitoring CSQ systems, naturally you hear a squelch tail. Of course with CSQ. But not so with the 1040! It is almost as clean as listening to a "reverse burst" PL output system with my commercial radios! Ok, just a puny leeetle snap. How is this even possible with CSQ?

I guess the DSP is responsible for this, and I can't remember for the life of me if the 106 was this clean on CSQ STE!

I'm thrilled. Much of my monitoring these days is not trunking systems, but conventional analog repeater systems. Great - some of them drop PL before the transmitter carrier drops, and some even do reverse burst. Makes my commercial moto radios happy of course, and some of the amateur ones too. Nice and clean STE.

BUT, for systems that don't normally run PL on the output, nevermind reverse burst, the STE on the 1040 makes monitoring the 220 repeaters in my area a total pleasure. The 220 systems are CSQ for the most part, and the 1040's STE is so clean and quiet I'm blown away. Wow. Even some public agencies are still running in CSQ mode, and the 1040 made me wonder if I just never noticed this super clean STE drop on the Pro-106 before?

So I guess the question is the STE on the more advanced Whistler models this clean on CSQ too?

Do any of them decode or filter out MDC tones (either way would make me happy!)

Right - a scanner and a commercial Moto radio are totally apples and oranges - but man, I freaked out when I programmed in some local CSQ systems and couldn't believe my ears in regards to the STE!

I love all the features of the Whistler series - but If anyone can tell me if the STE is just as clean on the advanced models with CSQ systems, I may have to upgrade immediately. :)
