I'm just curious, I was gonna get the 106 but the RS guy told me I should get the 96 since they are pretty much the same, its just 96 is older. both can do APCO-25 and all....

so what benefits does the 106 have?

Also, the Pro-106 has Signal Stalker (locates near-by transmissions) and it covers the MilAir band, neither of which the Pro-96 has/does.

It's the 96 which doesn't have mil-air.
Also the 106 is more sensitive and more easily setup so you can choose groups of talkgroups.

The 106 is the better radio by a fair margin.

Another thing, if your area is using or considering using 700Mhz in the future, then go with the Pro 106. The winstarr software will open the 700mhz bank in the Pro-96,(for searching), but it won't allow you to "trunk track" it. The Pro -106 will.

Actually the 96 does cover the Mil-Air band IF you enable it via Win96.
The 106 also has several nifty little features such as radio ID on trunked systems, programable multi-color led and I believe backlight on with reception. (I'm sure that last one has a better name, my mastery of the English language just failed me.....).
Of course if funds are tight a 96 for $200 aint bad. My 2 96's have always been strong performers, I intend to keep em even with my new 106 on hand.

A couple of things the 106 will do the 96 will not, is to trunktrack LTR systems, and can even autosort an LTR system if you dont know the home repeater order; and decode a P25 NAC.

The 96 had more intermod issues in my testing, and cannot touch the 106 on dealing with a simulcast P25 system. The 106 has better display function as well, and faster ctcss and dpl decoding. The 96 and 2096 got CHEWED UP by the PRWN simulcast system for me. They were so confused they didn't know which way to turn. The unidens were better, and the PSR radios (106 & 197 as well), are better yet at dealing with simulcast digital. Just my observations. For anyone in Texas and other states where vhf p25 is in heavy use, nac decoding is an important feature you can't get anywhere else either.

I owned a Pro-96 and currently own a PSR-500 and Uniden 396. The PSR-500 is definitely more sensitive than the Pro-96. I like the temporary lockout feature on the 500, which I am not sure the Pro-96 even had.
The 500 is enough of an improvement over the Pro-96 that it's worth the added cost IMHO. The 500 is the best scanner I've owned period, and I would expect likewise from the Pro-106. In a side by side comparison it sounded like the 106 had even better audio than the 500.

The 106/197 can also be computer controlled, whereas the 96 can only be programmed.

My favorite in the Multi-site search feature... Allows you to stop on a talkgroup and have the radio search all control channels for activity on that talkgroup.

Is the 199 a sale price, or is it the new price? I only have the SAFE-T system here thats digital to listen to, figure the 96 might be a good buy if I can get my hands on a cheap one now with the 106 out?

From what I understand, this is a sale price that is "in store" as the 96 is not even showing up on the RS website. As for it being a clearance, I have not heard anything about that. But guess it stands to reason that it would be clearanced, as with the 2096 given the release of the 106/197 pair.
