They have transmitters all over so you might be hearing one from another location. Sometimes you can hear two transmitters together with a slight delay (echo) in one of them. From what I understand Andrews actually sends the traffic even though they may say it is coming from another installation.

The echo you are hearing during the broadcast comes from the multiple transmitter sites not transmitting in sync creating a multi-path effect. Extreme multi-path can at times sound like feedback or whales talking, if you sub to hobby lists like UDXF you will often see posts containing the whale term. It is a common issue on HF when dealing with remote sites.

The DTMF tones control the remote sites. If you listen carefully before each broadcast you will hear Andrews key up, then a series of DTMF tones, these are the remote sites being turned on. The tones you hear at the end of the transmission are the sites being turned off. Years ago before BRAC, remote sites like Offutt and McClellan were manned and independently controlled with an option for remote. But now most, if not all sites are controlled through SCOPE Command at Andrews AFB.

Thanks for the education and resulting bursted bubble:D by the way 11175 is sort of active here last hour-like a pilot being switched by Offut to 11220khz then phonepatched...then a pilot over Utah asking for a radio check-etc

Even as much as I have listened to 11.175 and other MilComs I still get a thrill out of hearing them. I heard a Nuke Submarine one afternoon on 11.175 asking for a radio check.

Question-what does the call "Main Sail" refer to. I was just monitoring and heard this call tonight on 11175.

Excellent information all, thanks for sharing! I always wondered why sometimes, the "echo" is much more noticeable. Like others, no matter many times I hear the broadcast, I still get thrill listening.

I enjoy hearing it at times, but isn't the info useless? Am I correct that they are speaking in "rolling" code. Meaning the code changes daily (or maybe more often)?

So what is the point of monitoring it? Just for the joy of listening?

(Don't get me wrong, I listen too :) )

If you read the above posts they show examples of out of the ordinary transmissions. K9WG heard a submarine, you can hear pilots getting phonepatched, not too long ago some of us monitored mock dogfights-stuff like that:)

You are correct in much of what you hear is "encoded" but there are still plain dress messages sent. Anything the military (USAF) doesn't want you to hear I can guarantee you won't understand ;) How I understand it, the series of letters and numbers are instructions to aircraft. A "Sky King" message is rumored to be nuclear launch instructions.

I'm copying radio checks at this time ( 00:59 UTC). Female reading random numbers and letters and then giving radio checks to 2 stations I cannot copy.
