What's going on. I just heard this over A2 Dispatch. All units are too suspend their transmissions in this area until further notice. What do they think is going to happen?

I didn't hear anything about a bomb threat. Anyways, what does a bomb threats have to do the fire dpartment. The police handle the bomb squad as far as I know?

Just going through old threads and noticed this. Almost always when Baltimore City asks units to suspend transmissions in a particular area, it's due to a bomb threat. They also notify other departments and agencies to do the same. Transmittimg on a radio or cell phone may set some types of bombs off.

Yes, any cheaply made bomb detonator could be set off by any transmission received including harmonics from a close out-of-band transceiver.

Someone intent on blowing something up probably didn't spend the money to put a CTCSS board in their bomb or make sure it had a good antenna and was shielded.

Construction explosives/detonators are also sensitive to RF interference which can cause *ahem* unintentional detonation. Most sites where blasting is taking place have warnings all over them to turn off cell phones and two-way radios. Some places will even make you surrender them to enter the area.

Cripes, I didn't even notice I posted to a thread started before I joined! Hehe... hope that's not against ettiquette here!

Anyway, hopefully that made a little bit of sense; and hopefully since I used the word "bomb" in the clear that I don't get a visit from DHS.
