That's an ELT, an Emergency Locator Transmitter.

Most of them you will hear are accidental trips, hard landings can jar the ELT and set it off. If it is still going off, call the local airport. Most will be reported very quickly by aircraft or by ATC and will be fixed.

I doubt it is an actually emergency- probably an accidental trip. Also, the first five minutes of every hour are a designated testing time.

Yes, it was an ELT, never heard one of those before scared the crap out of me. Mostly because the signal was coming in so loud. Weird that it was after the first 5 minutes of Testing as you say Caleb and lasted till almost 15 minutes after the hour. Maybe it was one that was bumped on a plane. I would love anymore info anybody else has about it.

Yes, but you still have to call the tower or ground to tell them that you are going to do a test and (from memory:)) you're only supposed to let it do three sweeps.

It was probably a light aircraft, as mainline aircraft are all now on the 400Mhz beacons so that the SAR sat can pick them up. Mind you, quiye a few yachties have the old beacons!

Does that mean that since after seeing / hearing the recording that I put up on Youtube that you think it might be more then a Test. I am saying that because I recorded about 1 minute and 20 seconds of it. Even though I was hearing it for 3-5 minutes? And yes I heard about the switch of beacons for Marine craft.

Probably just an inadvertant activation.

Used to happen quite often before they made it mandatory to have guarded switches.

30-something years ago when ELT's started to be retrofitted, a company I worked for put the switch forward on the centre pedestal in front of the power levers. Right where the pilots put the flight manual at the end of the day and the aircraft was already powered down so in darkness. Unfortunately I was the engineer who lived closest to the airport - so guess who got called by the Tower to come and fix the problem........:(

Eventually we changed the switch and also put an indicator light up on the glareshield that came directly off the battery buss.:)

If you live near the airport and the radio signal is quite strong, the sound of the rescue vehicle sirens is usually a good sign, otherwise, nah!:)
