I can't find this listed as an aviation frequency here, but sure enough they're chatting, but I can't get much on them because of one hell of a buzz I have going on here....should this be listed as military?

Likely as not it's a spur from cable leakage, which is the same problem I have over here in Glen Burnie. Yes, the 138-144 mhz area is a VHF milair range, I've copied several Air National Guard units training in this range, including an occasional usage by NORAD (Huntress callsigns) and others. In fact, I tried to send an alert late last week that there was a lot of activity on some freqs in this range, but evidently Scan-DC is blocking my email for some reason :x
We'll have a nice list of such freqs, along with some Combat Air Patrol stuff, in the next CHM newsletter. (And yes, before I get flamed for it, this is a plug).

When the infernal buzzing I'm picking up at 138MHz goes away, I'll try to get a decent recording...
138.300 AM is a popular Air/Air freq for New Jersey ANG F-16's
They were working earlier today over Ches Bay practicing targeting.
Most scanners default to FM for this range but better scanners can manually be set for AM.
The New Jersey bombing range is still closed after F-16 strafed a nearby school a month ago so NJ ANG has been working the Navy Pax River range areas.
Entering range area you can hear them on Baywatch 270.800 and 256.500
F-16's have 2 radios,one VHF and one UHF.
They'll use UHF for ATC and VHF for A/A chat.

Yep, I also have heard this freq used with WI ANG F-16 as an air-air tac ch.

More than likely due to practice at Volk Field, Fort McCoy and the WIANG bombing range in Juneau county. Nothing will scare you more than a B-52 on a low level bombing run if you don't know it's coming from behind you.
They're targeting something, but that damned buzz is back...

Excellent! Based on that pic, if I can get rid of the interference, I might actually be able to get some useful scanning done between 138 and 144 MHz, maybe finally justify stealing a box to run a Shoutcast stream from.
And of course, I just walked in the door, having left ACARSD running all day with that noise present, and now, at 23:45, with ACARS traffic almost nil, the buzz is all but gone...sporadic, but barely noticeable....almost as if something is arcing or pulsing but moved further away...this issue will consume my free time until I start my new job or embrace binge drinking....

Anyway, they were up again this AM on 138.3, then moved to 142.3. This afternoon had a little on 138.425, and aircraft talking with SAM control on 141.55. It's getting busy out there.
Follow up - after I posted this, lots more stuff got active - 139.9, 139.45 (both used by Scary - DC ANG) 138.25 (NJ ANG I think), 143.15 (Ravage), 143.8 (Langley F16s or was it A10s???) 269.0 (more Ravage) and a new one 291.15 which was used by Scary talking to Watergate (Pentagon) about targets and verifying what was to be hit...

Pretty sure I've narrowed it down to a faulty/leaky heat pump unit on the roof....I most likely didn't notice it until now because it didn't get cold here until recently and the buildings here in the city take a while to cool down enough to warrant running them (I didn't start running mine full time until a week or two ago, actually). Did some cable rerouting and somewhat abated the problem, or at least made it not so damned broadband--at least now it never breaks the S0 point, so squelch now works, but you can still hear the buzz a bit after the transmission stops and delay holds the channel open. I so hope that place out in Hamilton I'm in line for opens up...shorter cable run, less noise, and a significant elevation increase...Shoutcast, here we come.
