Since Clarendon Hills FD deprecated 153.635 MHz PL 146.2 Hz from its main repeater, operations take place on DU-COMM Fire East VHF 154.415 MHz PL 146.2 Hz which simulcasts Starcom 21 talk group 2704, along with the other DU-COMM fire entities on that talk group.

Here's the dilemma: There have been random key-ups on 153.635 (with 146.2 PL) periodically since mid-August 2019. The use of 153.635 as a back-up for the Village of Clarendon Hills has been taken out of service since the water tower on the north side of Clarendon Hills along Burlington Ave. has been in the process of being re-painted. So, the transmissions have not been coming from there.

A back-up transmitter that was formerly used by Downers Grove Village Operations Center (VOC) had been thought to be taken out of service several years ago. Today, it was discovered to be connected to the VOC infrastructure antenna, with power also turned on. That transmitter was disabled also today, and it was thought that there would be no more key-ups on 153.635.

Much to the dismay of CHFD personnel, there are still key-ups occurring periodically on 153.635 MHz with no audio, similar to what had been heard before the DG VOC transmitter was disabled. If anyone hears these key-ups and has any idea where they may be coming from, please contact me at your earliest convenience. We would like to know where they are coming from, as they are strong in the southeast DuPage County area, namely in the Downers Grove, Westmont, Clarendon Hills vicinity.

Problem located and solved. The former "ring system" of simulcast repeaters positioned in the Westmont, Oak Brook, Darien area had the former Clarendon Hills repeater 153.635 still connected although it wasn't in use. For unknown reasons, it would key up for a few seconds, then drop out as detailed in my original post. It has since been disabled. Thanks go to Andrew Baumann, radio tech extraordinaire, Fire Chief Brian Leahy of Clarendon Hills, and tech Dave from ABeep for their assistance in this issue.
