154.845 for Frederick County

For Frederick County, anyone have a reason why Frederick County Fire is simucasting on 154.845? They still simucast on 46.34, and I can understand why for that freq., but why did they start on 154.845?

I think you mean 153.845. Don't know the reason but am glad they do since I can't hear the 46 mHz freq from my location but hear 153.845 very well. They don't transmit a PL tone with it though which I wish they would since it would get rid of the occasional bursts of noise which make the scanner stop on it.

You might want to check that - all the admittedly old references I have (they go back to 97) show that 153.845 has a 151.4 PL on it; I can't confirm it, because it's too weak on my 895 - but if you've got a better signal, see if that really is the case. If not, I'll make a correction on the CHM fire/ems page.

Well, Mike, all I can argue is the point that there is no PL tone for that freq that MY scanner will pick up. I've checked it countless times and the screwy, slow scan of the 785 goes through all the tones and just continues to click them off and never stops on one. I'd like to have a PL tone set for every freq in my scanner for all the obvious reasons but there are a handful that just show CSQ traits - and the 153.845 freq is one of them. Just as a test I'll throw that 151.4 tone in and see what happens. As much as I hate that function on the Uniden 785D, I've successfully found and confirmed tones for hundreds of freqs with it so at least I know it works.

[By the way, while I'm typing this, there is testing going on on 165.2375 which I have listed for Customs in DC. But this is so loud it must be at BWI. Check it out if you get a chance.]

No argument here, Al. I simply couldn't hear it well enough to confirm whether there actually was a PL or not - no insult of any kind meant here, and if there was, I apologize. :?

Oh and as to that Customs freq - that's a Nationwide listing, so it could very easily be used at BWI or at the Port, for that matter. I *think* the TSA people also have that in their hts....

Absolutely no need for any kind of an apology Mike. "Insult" never even crossed my mind. I was glad to have your info as I always am when you toss something from your experience into the discussion.

I've had that customs freq programmed forever and have never heard a peep from it until tonight. Perhaps it's a new usage at BWI or, as you suggest, maybe the port. As loud and clear as it is, it'll be a good one if they decide to use it locally.

As far as I understood, Frederick did not want to support the low band system anymore, thus, they incorporated paging with a new high band/ TRS simulcast system. Although 46.34 is still up and running and is also simulcasting the TRS Main TG, if this transmitter takes a poop, I do not think it will be repaired.

Thanx for the confirmation and explanation. I'm not surprised that the 46 mhz xmtr is going to be let go if it dies; a friend of mine who used to work on the Baltimore county system (including its 46 mhz freq) told me that parts for the low band Moto stuff are getting really hard to come by and very expensive; not surprising at all that they're going to let it die a slow death. Incidentally, you might also be interested in the fact that many of the Eastern Shore areas that moved to a TRS also went to high band, leaving the low band stuff behind.

Does it sound like some static with digital bursts? That's what I can hear on this freq with PL of 100.0 in Leesburg, VA.

No...this one was a voice test. Well, at least someone was keying a mic and blowing and making noises into it - not exactly voice but obviously what someone was trying to test. I've also heard that data stuff but this was something totally different.
