I spent the night in Plattsburgh and was hearing some comms on 156.210, the old Sheriff freq. One sounded like "jail talk" so it might have been the County Jail, but there was "DES" transmissions also, that were quite strong. Anyone have any clues what I was hearing?

I'm thinking Warren or Washington County jail, and the digital stuff is probably coming from New Hampshire.

OK. I went and checked my own website. The nearest candidate seems to be Hamilton County, then Fulton.

Clinton County Sheriff does occasionaly use this frequency so it could have been them. Before I moved and I still lived in Rouses Point, I would hear an occasional comm. on this frequency. It was rare though.

Interesting, because the signals were "full scale" in Plattsburgh, and the analog transmissions sounded like jail talk ("control, open the overhead").

Its the Clinton County Jail these use that frequency for jail operations. It is the repeater frequency with a DCS of 023.

Are you sure they are using a repeater? If so do you know how powerful? Whenever I heard them talking it was extrememly broken. I could barely understand them and I was only about 20 mi. from the jail

repeater ??

In most cases repeaters are put up to relay signals for a specific area from low pwr. radios. This area may only be a couple of miles. For example a jail complex or it can be over a wide geographical area also. The system you are speaking of may only be designed to relay low power portables to each other in and around buildings etc. So having the signal break up around 20 miles out may not be strange. There also could be a limitation on signal strength by coordination agreements.

Yes it is the Clinton County Jail with a DCS of 023. The Digital bursts are from the New Hampshire State Police digital system, these bursts can also be heard on 154.665 (NYSP car to car).

The Essex County Sheriffs Department also uses 156.210 with a PL of 114.8 with two repeater systems. One of their transmitters is actually in Clinton County on Plamer Hill in the Town of Black Brook. They often have quite a bit of traffic, especially during special events and traffic details.
