I live about 30 miles south of Richmond, Va. and have a number of preamped mast mounted antennas towered mounted at 110-120 ft. I hear many ground wave ducting signals and decided to log whatever doing vhf and uhf scan searches. Mainly I use a 996T digital scanner and several R7000s for analog reception comparison, checking frequency relationships, etc. I decided to log and id what I could for future reference as I mainly am interested in Va. transmissions and maintain a database for them.
For the past several weeks morning reception has been quite good from NOVA, DC and Md. Here ducting signals tend to favor north to south dominance vice south to north dominant reception. I hear some recurring signals over a period of time and sometimes by detective work using Google, Mappoint, area code id info,type of comms, structure ids, roads, streets, and other internet resources etc. given enough time I can sometimes can make a good guess as to the user. Other times I have a general idea and other times no idea.
Two repetitive vhf signals are proving hard for me to id that I believe are coming from Md. The first is 168.1500 mhz. repeater, pl 110.9 analog. Lots of comms involving sight checking vehicles coming and going on the facility. Apparantly some building construction is going on as most of the comms are security related to escorting or visually reporting vehicles "coming up the hill". Mainly it sounds like a civilian security operation with a few maintenance comms.
The next one is an unknown army facility I suspect also is in Md. It is 173.6125 mhz. analog repeater, pl 151.4, a favorite Army pl. One should not falsely assume because a facility has converted to a P25 trs that every radio user is now P25. For example, Ft. Lee, Va., next to my location, has been on 400 mhz. P25 trs for a few years now and several facility maintenance talkgroups are active on the trs. But there is one Post Engineer section that is not. 173.6125 mhz. was the Post Engineer's simplex frequency originally and somebody decided not make the move. Regarding the ducting signal, again it mainly is security related and these guys are super paranoid about vehicle traffic, for example actually stopping and searching a taxis leaving the facility, etc. A few maintenance comms also have been heard.
I've searched the RR database but nothing found. Anybody know who these users are?
