How confident are you in that Morse translation? Some of it looks right, but some of it looks very wrong.

KPH is historical maritime shore station KPH, California. And 17016.8 kHz is one of their frequencies. The same message should have been transmitted on at least 8642.0 kHz at the same time.

Thank you for the information, I just came across the frequency when I was doing a search and tried to decode it with Multipsk decoder and that's what it decoded. Really made no scene to me so I thought I would post it for information.

OBS = weather observations from ship to shore, often 3 hourly.
AMVER = "Atlantic merchant vessel reporting" - ships position, course, speed message every 12 hours to an address in New York from memory (fallible!)
QRU = Q-code for "Have you anything for me?"
QSX 4/6/8/12 = I am listening on these frequencies.

46 years since I was a Merchant Radio Officer!

Wow, very interesting information, it's the first time I came across this.

KPH is back on the air after moving several miles from the old historical site.
It is now a hard catch for me, too far for ground wave, and most sky wave is overshoot.
Seems output power is 1KW, where the old site was 4 KW.

Morse decoders aren't always on the money. Those of us who can decode CW in our heads sometimes have the same problem hihi.

Wow that does not look right at all. When I decode KPH
it should look like a High Seas Forecast in English with gps type coordinates and sea levels around the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu Hawaii.Try Morse Expert App next time it is outstanding.

Looks like KPH's "wheel" which is a continuous loop that basically serves as a channel marker for calling out that they are on the air, what frequencies they can be contacted on and what type of traffic they'll take.

Yes, what kb3ouk said - most HF marine coast stations did that - it was called 'diddling'. We didn't have the luxury of digital radios with spot on frequency displays in those days pre-satellites so we usually generated a list of stations used and noted down the logging scale numbers. KPH is not a commercial station so he indicates that by saying "QRU OBS AMVER" in his diddle.

Sleuthing through the text again, I think it says:

VVV VVV DE KPH KPH KPH QSX 4/6/8/12/16/22 OBS? AMVER? QRU? ANS 500/HF ITU CH3 K

which ties in very nicely with this statement from the KPH web page:

KPH will monitor 500 kc and ITU HF channel 3 for calls from ships, as well as on 4184, 6276, 8368, 12,552, 16,736, and 22,280.5 kc.

and In the MF/HF marine bands, use 2182 kHz, 4125 kHz, 6215 kHz, 8291 kHz, 12 290 kHz or 16 420 kHz.

I made an arithmetical mistake when I said "46 years since I was a Merchant Radio Officer!".
In fact I went to sea in 1964, 5 years Merchant Navy and 5 years Royal Navy Reserves, that's 60years ago! Jeez, I feel old!
