I Have a Manual

I have a manual but it is way too large to reproduce. Just send me the frequencies you want the punch code for and I will respond with the proper punches. If we post the freqs and punches here - all can share.
Maybe we need to start a Sears 5 band club - seems like more and more are being found/refurbished.

There is a DOS program floating around out there that will show the programming charts for all the old Binary programmed scanners.

I can't recall the name of it now but it worked for the old Bearcat 101 and several others as well as the SBE line which included the Sear's sold versions.

I made my own punch cards out of thick card stock and a long throated hole punch. The ones I used often, I'd run them through a laminating machine to give them strength. That always worked great.

The file is called scanprog.zip and can be found directly from this thread:

It is a DOS program but works very well as long as you can get it to run

Here is a slightly newer version of SCANPROG that I found on my old DOS machine.

It does run fine in a DOS window in XP Pro and may even run on 32 bit versions of Win 7. It also runs in Virtual XP Mode in Win 7 Pro 64 bit version.

Sears 5 Band Programming Aid / Cards

I don't think you'll be able to find any unused cards.

If you're handy, you can do like I did and make some yourself.

Mine are made from discarded cardboard from the kitchen trash.......A saltine box, cold cereal box, and a 12-pack soda can carrier.

I created a .PDF file that has the same dimensions as the original and glued them to the brown-side of the cardboard.
Once the glue set up, I trimmed it up, then used a 1/8" long-reach paper punch to make the holes.

I think Avery makes full sheet labels if you don't want to mess with the glue, but it's a little pricey.

The punch I use is made by McGill...Number 52400.

I've made the .PDF available along with a programming aid in the form of a .TXT file. The .PDF differs from the original slightly in order to conserve printer ink / toner, and to avoid saturating the paper with ink.

I felt a .TXT was better suited than an application because it's safe, and isn't locked to a single operating system.
Even the most primitive text editors have a search function that can be used to seek frequencies, or to resolve an unlabelled punch card to reveal it's frequency.

When printing the .PDF, make sure you print it at 100% or "Scaling: None" so that it prints the correct dimensions.
The first thing to check after the page comes from the printer are the card dimensions.
The card should be 5-9/16" wide x (sightly under) 3-3/8" high.
When cutting the card, the black border should be retained as part of the card.

I would NOT recommend printing the .TXT file.......It's over 4000 lines long !

Excellent work on the template and the programming codes file. I picked this scanner up a hamfest a cuple years ago and I was fortunate to have cards, manuals and codebook included. Tell me you deciphered their algorithm and didn't type in all those switch combos manually!

For those who want the real thing (or images of the the real thing, anyway,) I've got the docs I received with the scanner up here:

File Thingie 2.5.7

Enjoy!

I wrote a small program in basic to generate the list.

The algorithm is pretty simple......Punchings 14,15 and 16 determine the range.

For the 30-50 range, subtract 10.695 from the desired frequency, then divide by .005.
The result should be a whole number.......Convert the result to binary then reverse the bit order so that the least significant bit becomes punching one of the card.

For 150.000 - 170.000 MHz subtract 130.695.
For 450.000 - 469.995 MHz subtract 430.695
For 470.000 - 489.995 MHz subtract 450.695
For 490.000 - 510.000 MHz subtract 470.695

Very cool, well done!

Do you mind if you include your template .zip file on my archive site alongside the manuals I scanned?

Oh, "rabid technical community"...

Someone gave me an old Sears 61-3639 programmable 5-band scanner, complete with some punch-cards for the frequencies. However, looked online for a manual, even asked Sears, no luck.

Would any of you perhaps have a manual for this beast? I'd like to at least have the "cypher chart" for the punch cards, if nothing else. It's made for Sears by SBE.

Looks like this:
RadioPics Database - Other Radio Scanners - Sears <u>61</u>3639

I'd sure appreciate it if someone can help out.
I couldn't open that link to see the scanner for some reason.
