OK, I realize that a 21 year old vehicle with radios almost as old is not very glamorous compared to the newer vehicles and equipment seen on this forum, but why not? I use this as my runaround vehicle for errands and to pull my small trailer to the model airfield which saves wear and tear on the main car.

Anyway, I had the extra radios and picked up a second hand Pro Copper console for nothing, so I put them to good use. Turned out pretty good for a low budget project.

The radios:

Top - GE MVS 128 channel UHF for ham, PS, GMRS, business band, etc
Middle - GE MVS 128 channel VHF for ham, PS, PW, WX, etc
Bottom - GE MLS II 16 channel low band for 6m ham, PW and to monitor ham R/C channels

The switches:

Left switch - Turns all radios off at once. Handy when receiving a phone call or going through the drive-thru at Burger Things.

Second switch - The radios normally go off with the ignition key, but this switch will power on the radios without the key.

Third switch - Does nothing at this time. Figured I might as well add an extra one when building for 'future expansion'.

Fourth switch - Turns the 3 outlet accessory box on and off. The box itself has one, but this switch makes it a bit more convenient.

Right selector switch - Switches one microphone for the three radios. Less clutter.

Nothing special with the antennas. The UHF and VHF are 1/4 wave and the low band is a base coil for a "M" Spectrum UHF antenna with a whip cut so it tunes to the 6m band. Appears to work quite well with barely any reflected power. In the picture, there appears to be an extra antenna on the roof, but I didn't notice when I took the shot that the tower for the state patrol post was in the background...

Below are the pix, including a before shot with the factory console. Hey, if nothing else, now I have a decent cup holder!

Very nice job! Super clean and organized. Like the split loom coming in the back of the console. Is that for power and coax?

Amen to clean and well organized. Looks like your '87 was a clean truck to begin with ( no taco bell bags, pop bottles, potato chip bags and cookie crumbs in the front seat) or did you clean it up before the photo shoot?
I hate that when someone brings an older vehicle and wants a lightbar, siren or radio put in and you have to manuever around the trash. Stick your hand under the front seat and come up with some gooey unidentified mess.
Well done!!

That is correct. Three coax cables, a battery wire, an ignition wire and a ground wire. There is a small fused distribution point inside the console under the bottom radio..

I don't like clutter, so I try to keep it reasonably clean. I did wipe the dust off the dash and vacuum the floor mats.

Yeah, been there done that. I think one of the worst things was finding a taco between the back seat and cage partition of a CV. It had been there long enough that it was a bit crispy..

Thanks for the good words.

I like the idea of putting old radios into an old vehicle. :)
Looks very nice and well done.

One thing: I wouldn't have used the blue LED in that switch since the cheap ones of that color just appeared in the late nineties. ;-)

87 Blazer and GE radios

Nice clean organized setup. Owned a 4x4 S10 blazer with an Ericcson commercial VHF mobile programmed for the ham bands, with a roof mount 1/4 wave antenna. Used to work for a GE two way dealer. Great old stable radios.l

Thanks to all for the kind words. Now if I can get a couple more years out of the car, the project would've been worth the effort. It has 176K on it now, so I figure anything I get out of it now is gravy...

Very nice setup! I compliment you on the shape you have kept the S-10 in. Don't worry about it being a 1987. I bought a Toyota Land Cruiser new in 1977 and still have it. I'm near the end of installing $3,000 worth of parts to fix some worn out components, install a two battery system, and update my auxiliary electrical system.

It also looks like you built a very useful trailer for hauling your RC aircraft. Locally, most of the RC aircraft owners use a van. Like you I would rather use a small vehicle and then hook up the trailer when needed, although I don't have RC aviation in my busy list of hobbies.
