How about "I was wondering if someone could give me a list or maybe tell me of a good automobile." Give us a little more information, please. Handheld or mobile/home? Basic or all the bells and whistles? Strictly FM, or do you want to work SSB also? New or used? Approximate price range. Would you be interested in a multiband radio, or just 2m?

A good basic starter handheld radio would be the Radio Shack HTX-202. Good used units are generally available for less than $100. Limited memory and no out of band operation, but built like a brick.

Give us more information, and somebody will be able to give you more help.

First, you're posting on the wrong forum, try www.qrz.com where the hams hang out but be prepared to be pressured into becoming a ham. (;->) Second, everyone has an opinion when YOURS is the one that counts. The bottom line is the radio you choose will be the one that best suits your purpose within your budget. One helpful hint, an HT should NEVER be your starter rig, you'll be greatly disapointed. Portables come along later according to need just like scanners, start with a home setup and go from there.

I'm looking forward to the day when you have a license and get on the air, then everyone will say "Welcome to the magical world of Amateur Radio.". You'll have a lot more fun when you can talk to people rather than just listening AND serve the general public with certain aspects of the medium. Got your curiosity going? I hope so!
