Sporadic E openings on 11, 10 and 6 meters aren't all that uncommon in the summer.. But, there was a fairly rare sporadic E opening on 2 meters today. I got in late, but managed to reach Arkansas and Tennessee using the FT8 digital mode on 144.174 Mhz. (Both were 1000+ mile hauls). I was running 100 Watts into a 15 foot long 13 element Yagi.

The thing with sporadic E is that it can appear out of the blue and then vanish every bit as fast. (Which it just did). But I've found that these openings can occur randomly over multiple days during certain times of the year.

If you're in to weak signal VHF, it might be worth keeping an eye on 2M during the day for the next little while.

Had another great sporadic E opening on 2 Meters today.. Using the FT8 mode, I made 22 contacts and worked 7 states on 144.174 MHz up here in Manitoba Canada. There were four of us plugging away at it. Here's a screen shot of the PSKReporter QSO tracking page at the peak..

The whole North-Eastern seaboard seemed to be 'focused' on us :)
