Not sure if I'm in the right forum and apologize if I'm not but can someone refer/explain to me what and how 2-Tone and 5-Tone Signaling is and works. I have a programming guide from ICOM but it doesn't explain the concept and how to use it. I've also tried googling it and reading some tidbits here and there but overall it confuses me even more. So if someone can explain it me in plain english or refer me to a website that explains all that good stuff I'd really appreciate it.

That is a way of "calling" units, Fire and EMS use 2-tone all the time. If you ever see a Minitor pager on the belt of a fireman, that unit will usually be set up for 2-tone decode. The pager stays "muted" until the dispatcher sends out the paging tones. If that particular pager sees the correct tones, it unmutes, and the fireman will hear the dispatched message. There are many other ways of use, but this is probably the most common.

Thanks everyone for the help. So essentially the 2-tones are for paging e.g. vol. firefighters.
Now can someone explain what the 5-tone system is? Thanks again.

From http://www.mobilemarinesystems.com/html/private-mobile-radio.html

SELCALL, 5-Tone
Selective calling (SELCALL) is the closest thing to privacy on radio. Normally a system enables single users to call other single users, on the same system, without any other users hearing what is being said.

Sometimes it's used as a radio ID - 5 quick tones are sent when the user presses the PTT, and the radio number shows up on the dispatcher's screen.

It can be used for lots of things.
It was also used for paging at one time.

Is this the same as ANI or is ANI a separate ID system?
My agency uses an ID system on all portables so when you release the PTT you hear a high pitch beep type and on the base you get a read out of the portable number.

Completely different! In that setup it's a digital squelch tail that delvers the radio ID.

Probably either, MODAT, GEStar or some other variant of that signaling.

It could be 5/6, have to hear it. Is it like a beeeeeep, and then, beep, beep?

Actually, there is a bunch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_calling

I just checked the wiki link and it's close if not the MDC-1200 w/o data muting. Thanks.

Now my real question.....I have an ICOM F4061T portable and trying to assign it an ID but don't know how to do it or even which mode to use my freq's in. Can someone tell me how to do that with this portable? A great many thanks to anyone that can guide me in the right direction.
(Now I know I'm really off topic and apologize.)
