That real estate broker's license I got has paid off in more ways that one. :D I've done licensing and site acquisitions for 40+ years. It just sounded right to be a map and name.

The system IS on line in the CLT area.....sorta. There will be no wine before its time...... All the radio systems for state services that will go on VIPER will remain on line until the entire VIPER project is completed for mobile/portable use. The various state agencies are using portables on VIPER now where it's in service, but the old systems are still in use for mobile and old portable traffic. The Triad is pretty well covered now, too, as well as RDU and Charlotte. As for the SHP, the high band VHF equipment is being removed from the vehicles as they are switched out with new ones in the counties where the 800 is on line. Those cars no longer have high band radios or vehicular repeaters, and the troopers don't have the VHF Repco klunker portables.

If you were monitoring around 11 PM last night you would have heard TG 5040, State Capitol Police.

Surprised the heck out of me.

Never been able to catch anything on the Concord site before.

Wouldn't have been listening had you not asked about it.

Strange that this particular talkgroup would have a user affiliated to a Charlotte area site.

Take a peek at the Maryland forum. Check out the Charles County Emergency operations for a eye opening account of how cost over runs of a 800 system effect taxpayers!

Anyone have an official timeline of when VIPER will be beginning implementation in WNC?

The construction time line is supposed to be 2009-2010.

Western part of the state is in the last two phases of a a five phase build out.

Of course, any funding hangups along the way will cause delays.

Possibly related to the ongoing investigation of N.C. House Speaker Jim Black (Meck Co).

Maybe the State Capital PD were transporting supoenaed records to the FBI offices in Charlotte, or Rep Black has been assigned protection due to threats made to him or his family since the investigation went public.

I thought I would ask this question because its something that has been tickling the back of my brain.

Looking around we know what VIPER is for the most part, how are they implementing the system. For example:

1. Jacksonville Viper site is up, but Holly Ridge is not yet. Much of Troop B Traffic is still on HF but Troop B District 3 appears to be on VIPER. How is SHP handling this cutover?
2. On some documents that I have seen, it shows a list of agencies that are willing to jump on the VIPER system. How did the state court these agencies to join, or did the Agencies approach the state.
3. I know it is already happening, but can someone give me some examples of how interoperability has improved where VIPER has been implemented and embraced (i.e. Wake County).

Thanks --

Hey Bud I will try to help answer these questions and I know others will chime in also with help :)

SHP Dispatchers can select Dispatches to transmit on both HF & the VIPER system at the same time...a silmulcast (or multicast) if you will....so for the troopers they just answer with whatever radio they have handy...(at least in Troop C that is how I have seen it handled)...

Little of both...although I have heard stories of politics being played on both sides as far as the VIPER system is concerned...those stories are better left off the board here

Wake County is the perfect example...where Garner Police used to not be able to directly communicate to Wake County Sheriff's Dept (Wake SO used VHF High while Garner PD was on UHF) they can now communicate on talkgroups directly...Even Garner Fire Dept used to not be able to communicate with Garner PD directly due to GFD being on VHF and GPD being on UHF now they can talk all day long on the viper...Wake County is truly evolving to one common communications system (except for Cary...don't get me started)...Let me know if you need more examples...

New Hanover County Site

I just confirmed the site this past week. There will not be much activity since there is the simulcast to the New Hanover County System already in place. Be patient, it will increase. The Jacksonville Site is quite quite active! Troop B Districts 1, 3, and 5 are transmitting.

Cheers
