Locations of the Charlotte area VIPER sites scheduled for completion in the coming 6 months.

Should give you an idea of what you might be able to monitor in and around CharMeck and vicinity.

Do you get your data from the FCC's site, or something more user friendly? Do you have a master list of all the Viper sites in the state (or even just the Triangle area)?

Yes, I get all the data from the FCC site. Seems to be the most accurate way so far.

The official VIPER project agencies are not very good at getting info published in a timely manner. The master list they provided is tentative and subject to change as the system evolves. So I stick with what they actually license for each phase.

I have built my own database. Site coordinates can be imported directly from it into a mapping program, so making up custom maps is quite easy. I'm not concentrating on all the frequencies until the Nextel refarming is completed. I try to post frequencies when I can verify that a new site has gone live.

PM or E-mail me if there is something specific I might be able to provide.

Second Phase Licensing

Noticed all the second wave VIPER license requests were granted except for one.

Application returned for Fishers Peak in Surry County. Interesting reason.

"Appears the proposed transmitter site and associated mobile operation is outside the state of NC. Please amend the application and submit thru the coordinator for recertification."

FCC File Number 0002250907

It's in Virginia

That's right, Fishers Peak isn't in Surry County. It's in the edge of either Carroll or Grayson County, Virginia. I grew up near there.

There is already a tower on the peak that would offer great radio coverage into Surry and some surrounding areas of NC.

Surry has one of their repeater sites there.

That explains things.

NCSHP will have to change their paperwork a little and then the FCC will be happy.

To best of my knowledge..NHCounty won't be on Viper. The County Comissioners did just approve over 8 million for a new APCO-25 system that will be mixed analog/digital.

I don't think it's digital, from my understanding, it will be just to add more towers to the existing radio system they have in place, they're running that whole county off of one main tower and that's why they're adding so much money, but the paper said nothing about digital, buti'll go and recheck

Let me retrack my last, JerGotv3 is correct, it will be digital/ analog, the system is digital but the units will keep their analog radios, how the heck does that work ? I apologize for my ignorance of that subject and it looks like I'll need to save up for a pro 96 now if it will have digital on it

Scenic VIPER

Another VIPER license application:

10530 NC Hwy 12 6.7KM W
Wanchese, NC Dare County
35-49-06.0 N, 075-33-55.8 W

Near Bodie Island Lighthouse and Visitor's Center, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is where the mapping puts it.
