Has anyone had any luck monitoring Greenville and Pitt County since they went to Viper two weeks ago? Just got a Uniden BCD996T and am having no luck picking up anything so far. Any ideas what stupid thing I'm doing here?

I went through the Pitt County talkgroups and did a few additions/modifications...try entering in the Pitt Talkgroups as they are now listed in the database...and make sure the system type for VIPER is a Motorola type II (2) system and NOT a P25 system. Since VIPER is a 3600 baud mixed mode system you have to select the system type as a Motorola type 2 System.
Happy Monititoring!

Edited to add: Heard Pitt County Sheriff on 48000 this afternoon off the Blue Ridge Rd site in West Raleigh...

No joy with my PRO-164, uploaded today with WIN97 and the RR db. Still getting nothing, how do you set mode specifically - I have MOT selected - but not II or P25.

VIPER is a Motorola Type II (2) system...and if you have a pro-164 you should not have the option of P25 considering that radio is analog only...Just be advised that you will only be able to monitor the talkgroups with (a) for analog in the mode column (3rd column)...
Hope this helps!

kinda crazy of how viper works lol you hear pitt county in wake county must have been transporting or something

All it takes is one radio being affiliated to a Wake County tower while sitting on Pitt SO's Talkgroup...sometimes even not that...there are some talkgroups that you will hear all over the state due to their purpose...one of the fun things about VIPER is you never know what you will hear next!

Did anyone else hear about an outage wednesday morning?

I heard it from someone today and was amazed.

I know it happened in southeastern NC, but it may have been more widespread than that.

I dont know if the microwaves went down or what....

Granted everything still went on smoothly...I mean for a system as complex and as large as the VIPER plan is it is surprising (and a good sign) that we have as few issues as we do...I mean we could be alot worse and be...oh I don't know: STATE OF NEW YORK??11?? That we could have been Opensky still scares the hell out of me...glad things ended up the way they did...

Sorry to bother you boys, but I need a question answered. I live in Tennessee right near the State line just 2 miles north of Haywood Co. What freq and site would cover up to the state line in this area? I am not having any luck finding one.
Thanks for your time.

Im assuming you mean 4 March. I looked at my radio logs and didnt notice any change in the volume of traffic from 0400-1000 at least... Im in Onslow County...

Cheers

Duplin and Interop

Dont know specifics but I do know there was a massive manhunt one morning this week I was listening to them work the dogs and work with Pender county (Adjacent County). One time down here where VIPER was very nice because the Pender Deputy came right up on Duplins TG with no problem.

Another form of interop is that Eastcare can talk with Onslow County when performing medevacs by coming up on Onslow 800 system from VIPER. I am almost positive its a VIPER radio because the Radio ID that popped on Onslow 800 is the same range as for VIPER.

Cheers

Onslow 800 gives out their own IDs, so if it was the same it was only coincidence.

Onslow county is very stingy about viper, and really dont want to have much to do with it outside of basic interop.

I wouldnt call it stingy, Id call it "We got our own digital 800 so we aint jumpin on yours... If you want on ours come on over but we aint comin to you" type of thought process. Im trying to find out more because I got my PSR-600 logging and see a bunch of new TGIDs popping up. Will need to find a time that the kids are in bed so that I can put all of my logs into excel and analyze everything...

Onslow has a half-way decent system, if they would get all of their countywide sites up and running.

It would be nice if they would jump on VIPER, but I havent heard much of Onslow on VIPER. I know they have a few TGs on VIPER, but I have yet to hear any activity on them. Perhaps it is time to have their TGs programmed into my VIPER radio for interop purposes....

And yes, from a radio tech standpoint, Onslow is "stingy" in a sense when it comes to their system. They act like it is secure or something...if that's the case how come I can monitor it on a daily basis....

Yea dont get me wrong, its a good system, and I am not saying they should abandon it.

I am just saying that they have little intention of using the VIPER system outside of extreme need for interop.

But take NHC for example, even though we have our own systems, there are many users that have or will have viper channels in their radios.

Well, that is the point of VIPER. But some counties just don't get it. They think their system is they only thing that should be used and that's that. Some of them will see one day what they really need for interop when the need arises, then they will be scrambling.

The thing I like about VIPER, is the fact that the state owns and operates the system, not the local counties. My county is cheap as all get out. This way, if something breaks down on VIPER the State will make sure it gets taken care of, and not replacing it with cheap knock off brand equipment...

That, and you can't beat a statewide multi-site TRS with loads of inerop talkgroups with a single site county TRS that has some real range limitations....

However, it does help me, since there is a VIPER site less than 3 miles from my house....

Well even some of the users refuse to put certain talk groups in their radios, or vice versa. For them, being on the system is pretty much the same as being on VHF or something, because they won't be able to communicate with the other agencies anyway.
