N4YEK,

You're pretty much out of luck for the time being. Haywood County doesn't even have freqs licensed yet from what I researched. You're closest bet would probably be the Madison County site "Big Knob" but I think that's out of range from your location. Try a quick search in the 868 MHz range and see if you can get a control channel.

Trumpetman,
Thanks for your reply, I was afraid of that. I can catch a piece of one CC when the conditions are right but that is about it.
Again thanks.

Danny,
Have no fear! It may take a little while but you should have a site near you in the future. Just keep searching the 867.000Mhz-868.9875Mhz range for Control Channels.

Encrypted Talkgroup

I received Viper System Maintenance on 20016 Digital Encrypted from the Mooresville site this afternoon. It's the first time I've picked up encrypted comms on my BC296D.

I'm getting alot of traffic on that talkgroup on the Greensboro, Mayodan, and Sauratown towers.

Finally got a Trunking Scanner

Finally got a trunking scanner so I can get in on this.

I received today on the Concord site 4688 NC L & T Dist 6 which brings up a question.
Does anyone know what L&T is?

And since I'm here I'll add I also received:
2096 Troop C Dist 3 - with a bulliten
29840 Iredell Sheriff - was digital so I couldn't hear it
22304 Burke EMS Dispatch - was digital
05872 VIPERMEDTG 104 - This was analog, talking about turning in time cards

L&t

L&T = NC DMV Licence and Theft Division. (I would need to dig but I initiated some discussion about that a bit of time ago)

Cheers

L&T is the oldest state law enforcement agency, founded in 1921. Its primary focus is auto theft, idenitity theft and dealer and inspection station regulation. I'm a retired Inspector myownself. If my memory serves, it is outlined in NCGS 20-49.

Chris-
I believe we had a discussion about L&T in the last few pages of the archived VIPER thread. Check out that thread for little more info.
Happy Monitoring!

Ref 20016 Viper System Maintenance

It's a very busy talk group all over the state but you'll never hear anything on it but encrypted traffic.

It seems that not too long ago that talkgroup was in the clear. I know for a fact I have picked up non-encrypted traffic on that talkgroup previously. Why the change?

Alas, yes, at one time that TG was unencrypted....and if I had to take a guess at the reason behind the change I would guess it would be to stop nosy people from monitoring them :lol:

Interesting transmissions over Viper

Listening to a pursuit or something over DUPLINSO and the dispatcher said "Keep traffic on VIPER because subject is known to have a scanner" I guess Duplin transmits using the force over viper as opposed to Radio:roll:

I've got two better than that......

1. This evening around 1630, I began to hear some odd traffic on the Pender Ops 1 TG on VIPER. They were talking about "who has the eyeball" and "The CI has they keys to the car".

After a few more minutes of listening, I began to figure out that a few of the deptuies from Pender County SO and the Surf City PD were in the process of doing a drug bust or something similar....on a countywide interop/tac TG.

They then started to talk about how the channel they were using was secure, until a VIPER user here in the county come on and said "Ummm....no it's not, this is a countywide tac channel you are on". Man, those guys stopped talking mighty quick, and switched to one of the law TGs....

Man, that was funny....I bet Pender Law will try to get encryption set up before too long now.....

2. Last week a couple of the deputies here were talking about a particular person they were looking for, and wanting to stop him. They said something about him having a scanner, and since everyone has switched to these "digital channels" (as they called them), that nobody could hear them now. I happened to call one of the deputies on his cell phone and asked him what was going on. I then proceeded to remind him that I could hear him in the clear on my scanner and had him talk on the radio whilst I was on the phone...

Case and point...you never know who is listening and where they are....good pro for encryption if your comms are over "sensitive"....

I've got a question about the different towers. Where I'm at I can monitor two different towers (One is in my home county and the other is in the next county over). My question is, should I monitor both towers or could I follow one and get the same talkgroups?
