I might have a solution for you:

Reworked the GPS and D710 bracket to fit the leading contour of the dash:
Yep, that's exactly what I'm thinking about.

ProClip USA has a bracket which would let me attach something like what you've done pretty solidly to the dash in my truck.

How do you like the AvMap G5? I've been looking at the G6.

@ RAD thank you for your kudos one "Cot Jockey" to another.

@ EMD the distance between the vent and the back of the GPS is enough to allow for good circulation. I'm hot natured to start with and there is enough flow to keep me cool even at 105 deg and in a black color truck.

@ W9 I wish that I had known about that stuff before I did the bracket for the Blazer, would have saved a lot of time. Maybe not as much fun but would have worked just fine.

As for the AvMap... If you have a D710 the perfect companion is the AvMap. The G5 is the perfect APRS companion but it is not all that great of a navigator. The scale selection and detail are just not all that. Turn by turn nav is very good but the map view goes from just a few blocks to 2 miles with nothing in between. Ironicly, I was looking at a G6 yesterday with a fellow APRS affecianado, he had traded up to the G6 for his D710 and praised it highly. Better menu control, touch screen, easy access to tactical mode, and he said it was more "Garmin like" for navigation so I'm thinking about following suite.

If you are as big of an APRS nut as I am the AvMap is definitely the way to go.

But.... can it do APRS AND nav in the same screen at the same time?

I'm just messing with you.. I really like the pic! That is an "ultimate system".

You win...!

My apologies to the folks that have been following this thread but I have reached a full stop. I ordered the faceplates and components to finish the front console 3 weeks ago but alas they have not arrived. I did, however, receive notice from Kenwood that the TK-790/890 dual band / dual head radio was refurb'ed and would be shipped out Thursday.

Stay tuned....

Neat work and fun to follow

Hey Keith, as usual (and expected) you are doing some really neat work and it has certainly been fun to follow what you are doing. Someday I am going to get into radio and may possibly mount one....two....three....six...in my truck.

ha, ha.

Take care....keep on

APRs with the DR-135 is laying on the desktop right now. Just use it when I am traveling or when severe wx hits. The Spectra going in my work truck is on the desk as well. Just finishing up the programming and will drop it in (under dash) sometime tomorrow. Not much to speak about, just a mag mount antenna on top, direct (fused) B+ from the batt with 10 gauge wire, but the really neat thing is now I have a DTMF mic.

Don't need it.....but "dog-gone it".....I got it!

I took a look at that Uniden 996XT scanner you been writing about. That thing is really nice.

You be careful. Don't short anything out!

LOL

I will eventually try to find a spotlight but they are WAY overpriced, I'll find an old beat up one in a junkbox and refurb it before I'll pay retail for a Unity.

Why do you want to greatly decrease the resale value of your vehicle with a non factory installed spotlight that will likely be done incorrectly and greatly affect the structural integrity of the roof support? I would NOT suggest even attempting to drill the hole yourself to save money, at least pay an area police fleet dealer or 4 Wheel Parts shop that is experienced with this type of install. The factory spotlight option is $460 for a reason, it is mostly the labor costs from Kerr Industries for the drilling of the hole. I wish my 09 Tahoe PPV had no spotlight, they only get in the way of your view and keeping it up all the time to see looks to whacker.

Anyways, nice looking Tahoe and install looks good and clean. The 6 speed tans is nice, wish mine had that but that was new for 2010 on the PPV/SSV.

Whats is a PPV/SSV, go to Kerr Industries the factory upfitter for GM?

Thanks for the input Vic. As for resale value, I have no intentions of ever parting with my PPV but the spotlight is a viable argument. I have legitimate need for one as anyone that has spent precious time searching for a poorly marked residence in the middle of the night or lighting up a scene while you cut someone out of their vehicle can attest. AND... Yes the idea of drilling the door frame and "A" post don't appeal to me either BUT I am no stranger to the Unity drilling fixture.

I am open to suggestions on the scene lighting issue.

I'd at minimum put a unity in. I don't use mine for LEO purposes but as you said, scene lighting for rescues, a third 'bright' at night, searching for a house, etc. all times where a spotlight easily manipulated come in handy.

As for broad scene lighting, we've used some products from SoundOff at work for local PD and CSI vehicles. They're 6 LED pods that mount statically on the vehicle somewhere, usually we put them on the roof. They're extremely bright. I'll see if I can find them on the website.

Amazing....

This been an awesome thread to follow. The attention to detail during this install has been outstanding! I have the privilege of doing vehicle installs almost everyday with my department. To see someone sharing the passion is wonderful.

BTW:
If that GM manual is up for grabs, I'd give my firstborn to get my hands on it.
