All,

Which do you prefer for the ease of installing?.. The LTZ or maybe the LT... The PPV and the LS are not really in the running... I looked at one the other day.. it was "just too empty". I would like something with some comfort.. and a few amenities.

Have anyone here ever installed at least 2 Antennas on the roof with a sunroofed Tahoe? I would assume that the roof retracts at least it's own size toward the back of the vehicle not leaving much room up there.

A local dealer has a few of them in stock.... i'm anxious but i dont want to make a big mistake.. I like running 2 antennas VHF/UHF.. i would hate to have to use a DB Antenna... I just like the idea of having two separate.

Thanks

I'm going to be able to fit at least three, if not four, on my Trailblazer with a power sunroof. It's all in how you put them on it. The front will have to be along side the sunroof (one on each side, ideally) and the others can be behind where the sunroof stops.

Thanks for the replies...
I suppose if i were going to order up a new truck this would not be a problem.. I looked into it.. I'm going to have to go used. Just wonder what would be a good move. I think a LTZ without a sunroof might be nice... but i've never seen one.

That many antennas eh? I'd like to see the finished job. I had an older trailblazer.. i just had 2 NMO mounts.. that worked out well.

Return of the Tahoe Lyra

For far too long I have been working far too many hours and not devoting resources to the things I love, that changes NOW!

I;m back in the Memphis area after about 2 1/2 years of working on the East Side of the state and while I love the folks I've been around it's time to get back to what and where I love.

Since I will be first responding on medical / rescue calls again and helping where I can on fire calls I decided ot was time to upgrade the warning lights.

DISCLAIMER: I am duly authorized by the department and carry the credentials to operate EMERGENCY lighting / siren ONLY when responding to an emergency in MY DISTRICT. These warning devices are NOT to be deployed for any other reason.... PERIOD! The switch is two position and will NOT activate any RED lighting in SECONDARY mode. This is to provide warning until PROPER authorities take over the scene and I turn off my blinky thiingies and move on.

So... I needed a little more output toward the rear Whelen M-4 tied to the sync system.

Pull all the wiring into the liftgate (most of which was already done) and waterproof the connections just in case.

Once installed these little babies were bright and did a great job alerting other motorists that "hey, something is going on here"

Good to hear, Keith. I'm slowly picking up the parts for my 2004 Trailblazer to do public service events like bike rides so drivers are aware of the cyclists. No colors other than amber for me, and they won't be used unless I'm parked. Also got a couple of NMO mounts for antennas to put on.

One of the fastest growing segments of Amateur Radio is DMR. As things evolve and funding permits I will eventually trade out the current 90 series Kenwood for an NX system that will allow for DMR but until then there is a much cheaper way to get on the DMR mobile bandwagon.

The SharkRF Open Spot

Once you have set up your Brandmeister account just link the Open Spot and you can talk to the world. Set up your open spot with a discrete frequency, talkgroups and modes by accessing the dashboard via the on-board web interface.

You will need a mobile internet CAT5 type connection. Open Spot is said to be coming out with a BlueTooth / WiFi version but for now you will need a mobile router or similar setup. I just plugged it into my Cradlepoint.

Next you must have digital radio to talk to your Open Spot. Some use their inexpensive Tytera MD-380 but I just so happen to have a Yaesu Fusion FTM-400 and YES the open spot talks cross-mode. Just set your discrete frequency / tone / DCS etc in your radio and Open Spot.

#4000 clears the talkgroup and you can dial up a new talkgroup by dialing #(talkgroup number) The open spot will announce the talkgroup you are on over the air. I use my system like a mobile repeater and it works great up to about a block away. With more and more Emergency Management Agencies getting on board the DMR bandwagon it won't be long before we can call in a storm report just by dialing up the appropriate National weather Service Forecast Office talkgroup. Morristown, TN (MRX) ia already part of the DMR revolution so if you haven't thought about DMR, now is the time to consider it.

The Des Moines NWS office and the state EOC both have a dedicated talkgroup just for this purpose.

Once installed in the rack the Open Spot is barely noticeable, however on a dark road late at night the lights blinking in the back took some getting used to.

I discovered the hard way that the USB port on a Cradlepoint MBR1400 doesn't have enough 'juice' to keep the Open Spot running. More likely the USB port is set to look for a modem and when it doesn't see one it resets. So an external 5 volt USB supply is in order. I got the two USB port version because there will be more USB action in my future, I'm sure!

To keep the USB cable for the Open Spot from coming loose with vibration a little heatshrink tubing is applied.

More posts coming soon as I add UAV / Drone support vehicle to the growing list of things the Tahoe can do.

The old 4 head TIR3 Dominator hasn't kept up with technology very well over the years so it's time to upgrade / replace. If you have been following this thread for any length of time (yes I've been away for a while) then you know I can't do anything 'off the shelf'. Besides, if you build it yourself it's usually cheaper and a LOT more satisfying.

I decided to cram as many Whelen LINZ-6 LEDs as I could on the front push bumper of the Tahoe. Sadly I can only go to 9 as there isn't enough room for an '11'. So I found an old Dominator extrusion and cut it to fit 9 LINZ-6 LEDs. Then set about wiring the LEDs in a "manifold" fashion.

And secure them into the extrusion....

There are 8 RED LEDs (4 on each side) and 1 CLEAR LED in the center. The pattern is triple flash in a wig-wag pattern with the center clear LED hitting on EVERY beat. Something to ponder would be building a 555 based driver board to synchronize the center LED with the Opti-Comm system.... Just pondering...

IMG_20170606_222857348.jpg

AND..... Wire it up and bolt it to the push bumper...

A Dominator 10 won't fit and an 8 isn't good enough.....

Maybe I'll build a siren that goes to "11"...........

Nice work, a switch for low priority and high priority ... you would probably have to tilt that bar up 20degrees to hit the light pole receiver. What flasher are you going to use to drive the rest of the reds?

The Feniex Cannon amber LEDs I'm using in my Trailblazer have their own built in flasher, with three different modes for different patterns. Still working on getting them installed (also waiting on thw rest of the LEDs at the moment), and figuring out what pattern I want as primary and secondary. Maybe Keith's new lights are similar.

The entire bar relies on the individual flashers in the LINZ6s all sync'ed to the rest of the truck If... big IF I did the Opti-Comm thing I would disconnect the center clear from the SYNC circuit, set it to steady burn and drive it separately. Shimming the bottom of the individual lighthead inside the extrusion to tilt it up a bit but it's a great idea, thanks! As for the priority switch, if that truck is lit up it's high priority.

Love the ideas!
