Between propagation and high sites, VIPER covers extremely well for 800 MHz (in the open), a little too well occasionally. The mix of high elevation sites (most mountain sites & Concord come to mind) and high gain antennas give a fairly wide foot print. It's great for when one is only trying to receive long distance sites, but when a radio tries to talk back and affiliate, that's when the troubles arise.

My radio will get tricked by that occasionally, especially when I'm in the mountains. If I'm affiliated to a high site, it will start to roam to tower that I can hear really well...it's just located further away. I use site lock fairly regularly unless I'm travelling. I can usually hold Heathway until around Shelby when I'm travelling west from Charlotte and I can hold Bearwallow until around Gastonia when I'm travelling east from Asheville (of course I can't talk in from that far away though).

Affiliations also help keep random traffic popping up as well. When I'm monitoring the Bearwallow Mtn. site in Hendersonville, you'll hear SHP talkgroups from all across the state from troopers that are at the Justice Academy in Edneyville and listening to their home district. Same for the NASCAR races in Concord, you'll hear traffic from all over the state from all of the troopers who have their mobile radio parked on their home TG and keeping the portable/low band on the local channel.

rebanding?

Getting kinda late in the season. I am wondering when we will start seeing the rebanding of the Viper system? Will it happen site by site or one felt swoop I wonder?

Our county announced on the local VHF channels that VIPER rebanding would be occurring today in our area. Does anyone have any details on the rebanding process for VIPER overall? I could have missed it but has anything been discussed yet here in the forums? Have any new frequencies been uploaded to the database? Is everything just the standard 15 MHz shift or are there any special considerations? How do we know what towers across the state have switched and how do we program our scanners to allows seamless reception?

Eager to hear everyone's ideas and suggestions.

Might as well program rebanding tables in now. Rebanding just started and will cover the west end of the state, knocking out multiple sites in one day. The radios have already been touched, so when the control channel rolls down 15 MHz, they'll track accordingly.

I actually looked at one of the codeplugs in our county's radios after the touch and what I saw was that a P25 system has been added but no new control channels for the existing SmartZone system.

Explain?

As far as I know the NCSHP plan is still to have rebanding completed by the start of next Year.
And you are correct in that in most situations the P25 VIPER programming is being loaded side by side with the legacy 3600 programming with the P25 having an ALL CAPS for the Zone names (example: VMA) and the legacy 3600 programming showing up as lower case letters (example: vma).
Rebanding has already finished in the western part of the state and the next phase is to start on the eastern coast and heading westward towards central NC (Wake, Durham etc).
Central NC is one of the last (or the last area) that will be rebanded.
I am sure some folks can chime in and correct me if I am wrong (cough, cough MikeH:cool:).

Well, I felt like working today and my Catawba County radios are still working so......either rebanding went off without a hitch here or nothing's happened yet.

Our EFJ vendor was in for two days last week and added the 141 rebanded control channels. We were told it was supposed to happen at 0900 today starting in Catawba County.

No missed calls, no panicky supervisors, no one calling me to tell me their radio's not working. Makes me paranoid.

Something must be afoot.....pboy tells me that the Riverbend tower is offline, and all my radios here at Oxford base are affiliated with Barret's Mountain. I can see the Riverbend tower from my office window here....for that matter I could throw a rock and hit it from here.
