• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My Dad bought a 2012 GMC Sierra. He wants his Motorola Maxtrac 300 and a scanner put in it, so being the good son I am, and also having done a few installs for some close friends and stuff in the passed I am good with everything but one thing.....My Dad said he wants the radios to be ignition hot, meaning when you turn the truck off the radios go off. Is their an easy way to do this? And can anyone give me some advice on where I can hook to? Any input is much appreciated!

Don't do it! Don't waste the time putting the Maxtrac radio in as it will not narrowband. I don't think that it is worth the effort to put the radio in and then have to rip it out when Chester County goes narrowband. As far as the radio following the ignition you will have to run an igniton wire from a fuse that follows ignition to the ignition sense pin of that radio. The scanner doesn't draw that much power, therefore, you could just power the scanner directly from the ignition sense wire.

Somewhere there's an "accessory" wire that you could probably tap into. Maybe use the one hooked to the radio? Would be the easiest to access I would assume. They make special connectors that allow you to tap a wire into an active wire. Just need a set of wire strippers or a set of pliers to push the splitter in. That's about the easiest way I can think of. I'd be wary that it would void your warranty.

Use a hot wire to the battery for the maxtrac main power. Then use an accessory kit to bring the ign sense wire out of the accy connector and with the postivie for scanner and use a fuse tap in fuse box to find a ign only fuse.

the scanner and ign sense wire doesnt pull a lot of current so i would not worry about tapping like that.

And yes the maxtrac will not do narrowbanding if they require that. If strictly for ham use then it should be fine.

You could use a relay... Tap a fuse in the fuse panel that comes on with the key and use that to trigger the relay for the radio and scanner. That is what I did for the ignition sense wires on my ASTRO Spectras.

Use of the accessory plug on the radio *may* require re-programming depending on how it was programmed.
