I'm not sure when it was announced, but I just heard the dates for the 2012 air show will be May 26 -May 27.

Website is: Hill Air Force Base - WarriorsOverTheWasatch

Big bummer though is the prohibited items list: "Scanners of any kind." Wish the organizers would change their mind on that one. Seems air shows I have attended in the past have had a large contingent of listeners - particularly to the VHF and Mil air bands. It's definitely a big part of enjoying the event for me. Is this a new trend nationwide to ban receivers, or is it just localized to this event?

I would implore everyone to call and email the air show coordinators and ask them to reverse their misguided decision to ban scanners. I refuse to attend unless I can bring a scanner, period. I've NEVER heard of an air show banning them, this is absurd.

Airshow 2012

In order to access the flight line area, everyone will have to pass through metal detectors.
So be smart. No contraband. Weapons, pocket knives, metal combs, scanners.

No one is going to search your vehicle unless you give them Probable Cause.
You could enter the base and remain at your vehicle and see the air show from there.
(Along with your scanner) (But the porta-potties are beyond the checkpoints)

Ok, if someone is thinking of streaming audio, you must have a digital scanner for mil freqs. Choose the ones you think will be best. Post them and let us evaluate.

In the past, the base held training exercises along with local civilian fire depts one week before the airshow. Also, there has always been two airshows. A practice one on a Friday for base employees and local police, fire, & emt's. (they will all be on duty during the main air show on a Saturday)

Accidents happen, pray for the best, plan for the worst.

Awesome Thunderbird aircraft crash and Ejection - YouTube

http://www.ejectionsite.com/thunderbird6.htm

The second death occurred May 9, 1981 at Hill AFB, Utah, when Captain David "Nick" Hauck flying Thunderbird 6 crashed while attempting to execute a slow speed maneuver. The high density altitude and subtly rising terrain coupled with Capt Hauck's slow speed put him in a dangerous flight envelope. He hit the ground before realizing his precarious situation. The aircraft hit a large oak tree and a barn, then slid across a field and flipped as it traversed an irrigation canal, ultimately erupting into a fireball just a few hundred feet from the runway's end. No one on the ground was injured even though the wreck occurred adjacent to a roadway packed with onlookers.

I'd suggest making an article on your scanning wiki for this event - that way next year, and for years thereafter, you have a record of used freqs/talkgroups that can spot a pattern.

We have several such examples in our own wiki if you would like some ideas...Mike

The USAF base air shows always have the most screwed up, and overly restrictive rules it seems.
Last year at Keesler "transceivers" were specifically on the banned list but not scanners. There was actually a Navy Master at Arms on the checkpoint I went through and he didn't touch, or even noticeably look at the 2 scanners I had with me. A USAF person was a couple of "lanes" over doing everything short of full cavity searches on the people in her line. A perfect example of the USAF vs USN mentality towards this type of thing.

Here apparently a scanner is a bigger threat than a transciever, so I guess a wideband receive HAM, or other such HT would be fine here then.

FYI the MT 2012 Air Show is now available from the Amazon Kindle store for 99 cents. Pretty cool.
Milcom Monitoring Post: MT March 2012 Air Show issue now available for Kindle
FYI 2 you can look at and copy and paste all the freq info from the preview, OOPS!

Not that I personally give a crap but those planning on attending will be disappointed by this report that says the Air Force pulled F16 flight demo teams from many airshows (including Hill)

Air Force cuts back on air show demonstrations | ksl.com

Given that the Thunderbirds will be there it's not a huge blow.

And the Air Force has disbanded every flight demo team save the F/A-22 which is only scheduled to appear at 20 shows.

Hill is advertising and F/A-22 and B-2 on static display. This will be the first B-2 on static in Utah that I'm aware of.

I knew they were old, that's why I included the dates with them.
My experience at the last airshow, with a scanner:
The most active/interesting channel was the base fire dept.
EMT's on foot & bicycles roam the crowds looking for medical situations.
Several people overcome by the heat and also a possible heart attack.
Real life emergencies.

Some Security Police traffic concerning lost kids.

All of the other talk groups of the base were dead, on standby in case.
Any civilians needing medical treatment were transported by Davis County Ambulance (Layton Ambulance)

I think there were two thunderbird channels active, but they were about as exciting as listening to police motorcycle drill teams during a local parade.

So, I suggest that if someone wants to stream audio, whittle down the list.

Problem is, and I'm probably not alone, is that I do not know the first thing
about putting something on the wiki.

When our yahoo group was really active, all we had to do was upload a file to
our discussion group site. We used text, MS Word, and Excel.

I know, we have a world-wide audience, and everyone doesn't have Windows, so the info must be readable by all.
