For a long time that was Kansas guard helos but in the last couple years they seemed to switch to 32.1.

I did see one go over about 3pm central time yesterday so maybe they are still using it.

It's been pretty quiet but finally got some noteworthy hits yesterday. These are all stations I pick up regularly but it's the first time I've heard most of them in a month! What's causing the poor conditions?

Sporadic E peaks predictably in the summertime and the peak is most noticeable in mid June, trailing off through late July and into early August. Although I have had some small spurts this month including today. It also can happen whenever sporadically. kkn50's logs prove that fact.

As 217 wrote, we're out of the peak E-Skip season until probably December. Sporadic openings, but not much. Sunspots are low, F-Skip is not there for VHF Low Band. I'm not hearing much other than locals. I monitor FT8 on ten and six meters - not much there either.

What's causing the poor conditions?

Noting C.W. Wright Construction- license KRT982 - CB-like truck to truck traffic on 30.580 MHz CSQ - none of my radios are decoding either a PL or DPL. So in addition to the other CTCSS tones they’ve been logged with. They’re local to me on a job site, presumably this is their talk-around or general chat channel in their radios. 30.580 CSQ 30.580 no tone

I've found carrier squelch operation to be fairly common on low band channels, especially legacy systems like KRT982 (that's an old school callsign, for sure!). I'm guessing that, in the early days, PL was an add-on product that increased the cost of each radio and wasn't a programmable option like it is now. So you ordered a bare-bones one or two channel 100 watt Mocom 70 or GE Executive II mobile radio, crystalled to your channel, and added a whip antenna and you were good to go. You'd think that adding PL or DPL (at some point) would be important to low band users because those frequencies are the most prone to skip interference.
