Has there been activity on any? I thought they were going to 800.

I don't know who you are referring to when you say "they were going to 800." The U.S. Forest Service will not be going to 800, they will be staying on VHF-High for the future.

I'm starting to follow your posts more closely as you keep finding great stuff. When I see you post new information I can usually find the source or have already found the document myself or my Daddy has found it. We noted that using the map and finding the tones used on each repeater shows they are following the national tone plan issued by NIFC. They incorporated the Calif. FIRESCOPE 16 tone plan. It is good to see that national standardization is happening. Thanks again for sharing.

They are on "800" MPSCS Talk Group 4508 P25 Phase-1 Huron Manistee National Forest Fire TAC-2

My guess is that they have a talkgroup on the statewide system for interfacing with state agencies. Their own system is not going to migrate there. I would be surprised if there are many U.S. Forest Service units who have MPSCS radios. Maybe law enforcement and Division/Battalion Chiefs have them. Also is the possibility that a patch is set up on incidents and the USFS unit don't have MPSCS radios at all.

Thanks for the great information. I would be surprised if these federal agencies are using this statewide trunked system for their day to day operations. As far as I know the feds always have their own system for that. That, at least, is my Daddy's, late Hubby's and my experience in the western U.S. This is evidenced here as zerg is showing the Huron-Manistee NF 2020 radio system. In the document's radio Group 3, West Fire, 3 tacticals are shown, a Forest Tac 1 of 169.1250 , Tac 2 of 166.5625 (USFS Regions 8 & 9 fire tactical) and NIFC Tac 2 (168.2000). 3 other channel groups have the same. If, for some reason I've never seen, the entire operation of the national forests in Michigan migrates to the state's 800 meg trunked system it should be reported with its own thread.

My guess would be for interoperability with other counties, PD/FD/EMS, State Police, FEDS, Coast Guard, Search helicopters, etc. You never know what's going on in the forest or what you might find!

Yes, however the USFS can hardly afford to maintain their own system, let alone buy 800 meg trunking radios for everyone as well. I think the possibility is there for setting up a comm system for an interagency response to a large incident and state trunked system handhelds being given to each USFS employee who is assigned. OR, and most likely, they can patch the VHF national forest system into the state's system on a portable patching system on scene or in the repeater site providing the coverage. Out west, many states have big command/communications vehicles that provide such patching on scene. The CHP has 6-8 SUV's stationed around the state packed to the gills with radios that provide inter-system patching. My Daddy, now 93 years old, bless his soul, worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 36 years. He keeps up on most things USFS related. He says he knows what is going on in the forest, at least most of the time!
