What State police /highway patrol departments still use low band? Thanks Marvin

A lot of states still maintain low band radio licenses but use trunked statewide comm systems in the 450 or 700/800 bands.

California, Missouri, Oklahoma, and West Virginia still use low band. I'm sure there are others.
California is probably the biggest user. They tie up a bunch of 39 and 42-45 MHz police frequencies.

We are about to start playing on Low Band. I am submitting an application for a repeater pair and will be building a voted system with parts around. My coordinator asked me if I had a preference in frequency. Is there much performance difference between lets say 30MHz and 40MHz? Our equipment is mostly 40.

The lower frequencies will provide better coverage to a certain degree but they're much more prone to skip interference. It's possible to have skip rolling on the 33 MHz fire channels and the 31/35 MHz business band frequencies with little to no activity on the 46 MHz fire channels or the 48/49 MHz utility and business frequencies. Skip always hits the lower frequencies first. Go to the FCC GenMen site and do a nationwide query on your proposed channels. Some of the low band channels have very few licensees, especially the oddballs like the 25-26 MHz and 29.7 oil freqs. My business used 48.96 MHz for a decade with only occasional skip interference. Low band is awesome. Good luck and have fun!

Would you consider starting a thread to keep tabs on the progress? I would like to know what type of equipment you are using and how you are setting it up. I am working on building a 6 meter repeater now and find lowband really interesting.
