Hi All,

I'm hearing rumors kicking around that the WSP is doing a major upgrade to the radio system I've heard they had purchased new mobile radios and portables for everyone, and they have also purchased new repeaters as well. I heard this is the largest communications update that the State Patrol has ever done. Just was curious to see if anyone out there has heard anything about this. I've also heard that everything is in and there just waiting for the radios to be installed in the new incoming batch of cruisers.

This might answer some of your questions.

Good read. Actually pretty good report by TUSA.

I think WISCOM got a pretty good bang for their buck on the first generation of the system. The CAP testing and multivendor certification was a hairy process as some of the third teir vendors were very green on P25. ICOM had only one engineer reporting to Japan. The grounding and bonding problems are scary. Maybe that EFJ equipment is good at keeping Thor under control.

When did most of this migration take place? I did not visit Wisconsin last year so I may have missed it. Looks like I have some programming to do.

I believe the DNR wardens now have Motorola mobiles and portables, so maybe the WSP will be following suit. I don't think I've seen posts about it on here, but it's sounding like the next iteration of WISCOM may be an 800 MHz system.

If WISCOM is going to migrate to 800 MHz statewide, they will need a lot more towers!

It sounds like they will be putting up more tower sites up and it sounds like troopers and inspectors will be issued new mobile and portable radios, sounds like there ditiching there wireless x10dr setup they have now. Sounds like they have been trying to get there newest batch of cars on the road but can't get the radios in because of the chip shortage.

nope, pretty much all i know is what was detailed in that document that I had found. All I know is I've heard rumors kicking around for quite a while that they were kicking the idea around about doing some updates to the system for a few years now.

I know that when I was with DOC, we didn't like the Johnson radios. The battery life sucked on them.
