Does anybody else notice that Kansas City site 401 is consistently changing control channels especially in the morning?

Yes, that's been a constant thing for several months. It bounces back and forth between 851.325 (primary control) and 851.8625. It seems to happen in short 30-45 min increments between 7 and 9 AM. I haven't noticed it when using my equipment, but it's very evident if you use logging software.

I just picked up an SDS100 and was working through getting comfortable with organizing favorites and was wondering if there was a reason the Jackson County MO Department had a bunch of different cities and variety of TGs (Police/Parks/Public Works/Code Enforcement). I had the idea to have a very targeted favorite made for Blue Springs and wondered if there was value in that level of organization. I'd like to not hear Jackson County Parks if I want to focus on BSPD/CJC.

Thinking through the implication of that I see that'd be a bit of work to reorg things out of that single grouping/department.

If others have another suggestion on how to better organize, I'm all ears. My last new scanner was a Pro95, so the SDS100 has been a big adjustment.

I have a different type of scanner (OP25), but here's what I did. When I first set it up, I downloaded the entire list of MARRS talkgroups from here, and told OP25 to listen to all of them. This included agencies from all over the metro area, on both sides of the state line. I then listened to it and wrote down the talkgroups that were not interesting to me or that were E all the time. Once I had a handful of unwanted talkgroups on the list, I'd edit the OP25 configuration and tell it to skip those talkgroups, and then start listening again. I did that most evenings for a week or so, and that was enough to narrow the talkgroup list down to the ones that were most interesting to me.

The SDS100 should have a similar mechanism to tell it what talkgroups you are interested in and which ones you don't want to hear. I don't know the specifics of how to tell it that, but I'm pretty sure it's possible.

As far as why the list is so big, I'd guess that's because Uniden wants "something to happen" as soon as you turn on your new scanner - you can probably hear some radio traffic from an agency in your area. If you bought a Pro-95 new, you remember when scanners came "empty" and unprogrammed from the store... it was your job to type in all the frequencies on that tiny little rubber keypad, or spend extra money on the serial port cable to program it from your PC. I suspect Uniden is trying to simplify that process for their customers. :)

Because of how the trunking works, "the system" does some of the filtering for you. If an Olathe police officer keys up their radio, it is unlikely to be transmitted on the eastern Jackson County tower - if you live in Independence or Blue Springs, you are unlikely to hear it, even if you have the Olathe PD talkgroups active in your scanner.

This doesn't always save you, though - if a KCMO officer that is south of the Missouri River keys up, it will most likely get transmitted on both the central and eastern Jackson County towers. If you're in Independence or Blue Springs, you might hear about things in downtown KCMO or way down south of 435 that are not interesting to you, if you have the KCMO talkgroups active in your scanner.

You may be a little bit disappointed when monitoring the Blue Springs police. Only their dispatch (talkgroup 3800) is in the clear. The north and south patrol talkgroups (3801 and 3802) are always E. Some "regular" traffic happens on 3800 - it's not just the dispatcher sending officers to calls - but some of the "regular" traffic is on the patrol TGs.

CJC fire is always clear. Lake City fire is clear, too - it's not very busy but I think it's kind of a novelty to monitor.

Has anyone else noticed the Unit ID (UID) alias changes with KCFD's portable radios? Their portables used to be in the 4008XXX range. Within the last week or two, I've noticed that the portables are in the 4009XXX range. Just wondering if they got new portable radios or if this is something temporary while they reprogram/add encryption. Not sure if there's any truth to this, but I've heard KCFD may be going encrypted on the ops and tac talkgroups (A2 thru A10). The 4009XXX radios used to be spares for ballgames and special events.

I hadn't noticed it, but I did a little digging through my log files just now, and it seems like 4009xxx IDs are becoming more common lately.

I upgraded my scanner software (OP25) in early July, so I have logs from about 2022-07-07 18:00 to 2022-08-30 00:45 handy. I have logs further back than that I can check if needed.

For the entire time range in my log, 2022-07-07 to 2022-08-30, I heard 308 unique RIDs in 4008xxx and 247 unique RIDs in 4009xxx.

For July, 2022-07-07 to 2022-07-31, I heard 268 unique RIDs in 4008xxx, and 5 unique RIDs in 4009xxx.

For August, 2022-08-01 to 2022-08-30, I heard 234 unique RIDs in 4008xxx, and 246 unique RIDs in 4009xxx.

I monitor just the central and eastern Jackson County towers, so I don't hear activity in other parts of KCMO.

I also have a file where I try to map IDs to units. This isn't automatic; I have to listen to the audio, note that ID 4008123 is Pumper 87 or whatever, and then manually edit that file. This file goes back a few years. So far, I have 94 4008xxx IDs in that file, and only 1 4009xxx ID.

I have a excel spreadsheet of which UID's belong to each KCFD unit. I'll attach and send it to you in a private message.

Also, I found a new talkgroup 34391. Can anyone identify which agency uses it? All of the radio traffic shows up as encrypted on Pro96COM.

I've got TG 34390 logged from December of 2021, but have yet to see 34391. The only RID I have logged on 34390 is a four-digit user, 1282.

The next-nearest TG that I have is 34388 which has had JaxCoSo on it.
