2051 and 2055, Why sale both. It don't make sense to me?

Why release another mobile the 2055 soon after the 2051 is released.

I realize the 2055 will be far superior to the 2051 adding text and signal stalker but both have 1000 channels and you know that the 2051 sales will hit rock bottom now that the 2055 is to be released.

I realize that the 2055 is a GRE scanner and the 2051 is Uniden but why even bother creating the 2051 if you are going to release the 2055 soon after. I think maybe Uniden made the 2051 and then after the 246T was such a huge success decided to pawn the 2051 off on RS and hopefully develop a mobile 246T, then that would explain why Uniden didn't want the overstock of the 2051 after the new mobile hit the market.

Anyone with better info, please fill me in.

This has always been a fundamental RadioShack design flaw: too many models. The redundancy confuses consumers.

The company could reduce development costs by releasing fewer models. Instead, it chose to release "base/mobile" packaged scanners, which are really mobile, not base models.

I just don't understand the point of having the 2051. I can see having the 2055 as a mobile to the 97. That makes sense to me. The 2051, it just don't make sense. I am sure that a number of people have bought the 2051, but if I would have paid $200 for a mobile scanner (with not alpha tags) and a month or two later see the 2055 hit the shelves with signal stalker and alpha tags, I would be upset. Fortunately, I don't really care for the mobile units, I like handhelds cuz they will work anywhere! I wouldn't mind having a base/mobile at my house, but don't have the $$$ to drop on one.

Each time a new model is introduced it boosts sales... just like automobiles.

If you think there are too many models today, remember back in the mid-80s? they had about 15 different portables and base models!

I should say that I think having choices is excellent! I was just trying to make sense of it all, releasing scanners so closely together. I guess to each his own, and the two scanners do have different features for different users like the beartracker function....

Because Uniden doesn't make scanners (or NOT make them) based on GRE's marketing plans?

This is Uniden competing with GRE for the Radio Shack dollar. Nothing more.
