Wasn't sure if this should be in the Amateur Radio section or here, but since it's specific to Alabama I'll drop it here in this forum.

I'm located in Huntsville, active on the 2M/70cm ham bands. Is there anyone in this area that's familiar with any activity on 222/900/1200 MHz? I have a few radios that will receive 222 and 1200 but neither are very sensitive in that area and I've not heard any ham activity. I don't have anything that can monitor the 900 MHz band, so no idea there either.

According to the repeater book app on my phone, there are a few repeaters in the area:
224.940, 927.500, 927.5875, 1282.5000, and 1284.0000. I'm curious if anyone in the area has either used or heard any activity on these repeaters or other repeaters in those bands.

I took my HT one year to the Huntsville Ham Fest and tried to key up the 220 repeater in Huntsville and had no response. The 220 band is used very little. The only 220 repeater that I know that is active in the state is in Montgomery. As far as 1200 DStar Repeaters are starting to use this band for digital traffic. The digital traffic is paperwork scanned in on a computer then transmitted over the air to another station. . No voice. The 1200 mhz has a major down fall , short distance only. Dont worry, You not missing anything major if you cant hear the high UHF Bands.

I haven't heard of anyone using those bands around here, but i also have never listened for them. I also haven't ever heard anyone talking about using those bands either.

re: 220/900/1200 in Huntsville

The 224.940 machine is operational off Green Mountain, 900 & 1200 are paper tigers.

In 1996 there was a slight resurgence in 220, in Huntsville, when several of us found a deal on some older Icom 220 mobiles at the hamfest.

At the time, the repeater was at Channel 31, next to the 146.94 repeater. The 220 repeater was was experiencing squelch trouble, which we remedied by simply turning the squelch knob on the repeater back-and-forth and returning it to the proper position. The repeater had been sitting there so long, that the squelch knob connections had slightly corroded and lost reliable connection.

After that "highly-technical" adjustment, the repeater worked well for several months. Unfortunately, we grew tired of all having additional radios and antennas on our vehicles. The exclusivity of 220 grew stagnant, and we all seemed to gravitate back to 2meters/440.

The 220 repeater currently operating off Green Mountain is not the old machine that had the squelch problem. It is a more up to date repeater and does work well.
