Just heard a some strange computer generated noise on mil guard 243.000. It sounded like some sort of test pattern sound.
It was like the sound effect used in old movies to depict what an early computer or robat was suposed to sound like. Sort of a "beep-boop-ba-beep" series of different tones, with a rising and falling whistle in the back ground. It was also coming in on 351.000 but not a strongly.
Anybody heard anything like that before or is it some sort of localized interference?

Could be one of the many EPIRB devices on the market now.

Thanks for the tips guys.
I heard it again so I unplugged my modems and it carried on! Maybe it is a neighbors modem, an EPIRB or some kinda test signal.

I have never heard any tones or beeps on 243.0 but there are several weak carriers in certain areas in several towns around here. It appears to be CATV leaks or some type of consumer electronics device.

I would agree with an unintentional radiator or cable leakage, as being the most likely candidates.

EPIRBs are not on MAD. Military ELTs make some noise, but not like what the OP was describing.

There are EPIRB's which do transmit on 243.0 mhz. as well as 121.5 mhz also.

EPIRB FREQUENCY PHASE OUT

Thanks for all the info guys.
I was hoping it was some kind of cool test transmission I was hearing and am sorry to find out it's just trash.
Thanks again,
