i have 2 scanners, a 350c and 246.

recently my 350's dc plug took a dump and doesnt work anymore, so until i pick up a new dc plug ill be using my 246 in my truck.

i have a 99 f150, with offroad tires, so its pretty loud in the cab. i had a 20w external hooked up to my 350c, which worked just fine, loud and clear. however.. when i plug it into my 246(which is plugged in via dc) its quieter than ever. is this cause its a 20w speaker? i just dont want to blow my 246's speaker and have to buy a new one.

any suggestions? thank you!

Your BC246T's audio jack is only designed to use a headset. It is not designed to power an external speaker. It is also possible that the external speaker could damage the audio output on your BC246T so I recommend to not attempt this. Your BC350C does have the appropriate external speaker jack (which is also on every base type scanner) but the hand held scanners are not intended to be used this way.

Speakers are rated for the wattage they can handle. A 20w speaker won't produce 20w of output unless being driven at that rate.

As stated, the 246 is designed to drive headphones and the audio output is less than 1w.

Not sure how this could happen, the amplified external speaker load on the radio will be less than the headphones more than likely, I have been running an amplified speaker on my Pro 46 for years, and it still works fine, if you have something to backup your claim that a amplified speaker can damage a scanner, I will look at it.
The worse case scenario is if, amplifier isn't driven with enough power it will be quieter that with a higher output as with the 350. On the other hand a person wanted to share his tunes with friends form his I-pod and got one of the y cables, and plugged both headsets into the I-pod headphone jack, I could see potential problems, for example of the I-pod is set up for a 32 ohm load, adding the second headset would reduce the impedance to 16 ohms, then the I-pod power amp might cease to function.
