OK. My first catch on milsats since the 90's. Just really getting back into milsats after quite a few years. One of the reasons I got the 396XT. From approximately 4:30pm EDST to when I got out of my vehicle just after 5:30pm EDST today, listening to spanish on 255.550. Understand, this is through a 1/4 wave cut for 136MHz on a trunklid mount on the car. Wonder if tropo had anything to do with this considering the front that is moving in to the Southeast. Just thought I'd let ya'll know.

I think 252.150 is used by truckers in Brazil. Very active during the night time hours. When I do logging sessions for CONUS activity this one usually ends up being 80% of the hits and gets locked out. The pirates are nuts... I've heard it all from echo mics, playing music, karaoke singing and excessive whistling. No different than American CB radio

I've heard a lot of stuff on 255.55 and its all been in Brazilian Portuguese, not Spanish. Portuguese sounds a little like a mix of Italian and Spanish. Different areas of Brazil have varying accents and much of the accents on 255.55 have been identified as from São Paulo.

Thank you prcguy. It didn't sound like any spanish I've heard. Should of remembered they spoke a version of Portuguese there:)

when you say they are pirating the sat what do you mean? Do they all have antennas and pointing them at the sat and using it as a repeater? I'm pretty new here...

Yes...that is what he means. They build home brew antennas and point them at the satellites. For radios they convert 220mHz ham radio's so they transmit in the 300mHz range by adding a freq doubler. Its been going on for a number of years now. There have been many arrests to no avail as they continue to pirate these multi million dollar military satellites and uses them as their own CB radio repeaters. Its quite amazing.

To add to this, I was monitoring last Thursday, or Friday, and one guy was almost calling CQ. He was looking for DX contacts! Quite good english was being spoken. Then back to portuguese. Full quieting too.
