I heard what sounded like an amateur radio QSO on 27.610 LSB this morning during a band opening. At first I thought it might be CB "freebanding" but they sounded a bit too refined for that. They were calmly talking about amplifiers and band conditions. Was it MARS that I was hearing? It was gone before I could get any call signs. I thought it was also curious that it was LOWER side band, not upper.

It could have been actual CB sideband. Cb channels 37,38, 39 and 40 are designated the sideband channels for CB, and they all use lower as well.

This would of been in the area of "Freebanders" anything above( channel 40) 27.405Mhz.These channels do have a lot of activity on them and from what you were hearing this was a freebander having a communication with another station" somwhere in Feebander land" Best Requards,Tim DeLong W9NES Ham Radio Operator,Indianapolis,Indiana

Yes Freebanders, the ones who pay money to get those "Extra Channels" above CB ch. 40
Not supposed to be there, but you know how that go's.

Yeah, freebanders use LSB or USB...or whatever they want, really. When the sunspots are up and that band gets really crowded the majority of US freebanders switch to LSB to avoid interference from South and Central American stations that generally are on USB. 27.620 MHz IS a MARS frequency, interestingly enough.

The funny thing is that a lot of the free banders operate better than many HAMS on 75 meeters, although 75 seems to be getting better.

Freebanders alright and not surprisingly, monkeying with the PLL chip not only gives them the "extree channels" but a 5KHz offset as well. Modify a ham rig and you have a CB with a VFO so you can dial in anything you want down to 10Hz increments, every bit of it illegal of course.

Jay, why are you so surprised? (;->) Freebanders have been operating "ham style" since someone got the bright idea to plug an odd crystal in an old tube radio and some hams operate worse than the average CBer, so what else is news?

Actually, my modified ham rig tunes right down to 1hz increments.

If ya got nothing better to do than to worry about 11meter freebanders then.............?

Jay, if that were the case we'd get a rest. (;->)

Beaver, a ham rig modified "that way" is a pig rig unless you're using it on 60M. Well, that's to be expected from one who doesn't recognize the taste of fish with hot sauce.

Beavers love fish and and are on quite the see-food diet. Crystal Sauce is our favorite.

Of course we make use of the 60 Band as we use all bands. And your suggestion that any radio modified for a purpose which may or can break some weenie rule in your corrupt and warmongering current temporary administration's radio frequency communications guidelines just puts us in a dizzy of a pickle. Well....not really.

Beavers say: Don't sweat the small stuff and have fun with radios. This is why you can sojourn in our forests and observe the many trees not sweating the small stuff and having fun with radios. Why ?? Because when Beavers speak.....trees listen !

pig rig ?? How uncouth
